8-year-old Philly boxers hang with Steve Harvey on NBC’s ‘Little Big Shots'

Who needs Rocky Balboa? This weekend, NBC’s Little Big Shots will feature a couple of pint-size Philadelphia boxers with a substantial following in their own right.

Airing Sunday at 8 p.m., the program will showcase the Grandy Twins, Steven and Daniel, a pair of 8-year-olds out of West Philly who began hanging around area boxing gyms at age 2, thanks to their dad, Danny, who boxed in Philly’s amateur circuit in the mid- and late 1990s.

Grandy, 36, says he trained at well-known gyms like the James Shuler Boxing Gym in West Philly and Joe Frazier’s Gym in North Philadelphia during his boxing career. Now, he trains his sons — and about 10 other young boxers — at Kingsessing Boxing Gym in Southwest Philly and Delco Boxing Academy in Glenolden, a process he says he started years ago by bringing his sons to the gym in their car seats.

“I’m just trying to keep them away from the negativity that goes on in these Philly streets,” Grandy says. “Growing up without a father, I didn’t have this push. Hopefully they stick with it.”

Even without the Little Big Shots appearance, that outcome seems like a pretty good possibility. The twins are something of a force to be reckoned with online, thanks to more than 43,000 Instagram followers, about 16,000 likes on Facebook, and no small amount of media coverage of their boxing skills. At the twins' most recent match, Grandy says, about 600 supporters showed up.

Grandy has been training with his twins for several years, and limits gym days to about three a week to keep them interested in the sport. Sparring is just one day a week. The rest of the week is dedicated to schoolwork, thanks to the twins’ mother, a teacher, as well as Grandy’s desire to not burn the boys out on the sport.

“Work-wise, being identical twins, they push each other so much that they work harder than everybody in the gym,” Grandy says of his sons. “It’s that twin competition. They bring joy to other kids training. They make all the other kids around them better.”

But while he is confident in his sons’ skills in the ring, traveling to California to film Little Big Shots alongside host Steve Harvey did have Grandy a little worried.

“It was an amazing experience,” he says. “I was nervous as a father because it’s such a big platform for them. But they handled it. It reminded me that we’re on a good path.”
