M. Night Shyamalan jokes he ‘wrote the ending’ to this year’s Oscars

Haley Joel Osment can see dead people, Bruce Willis is invincible, and Moonlight actually won Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards.

The common thread between all these things? M. Night Shyamalan, apparently.

Sunday night brought the biggest twist ending in Oscars history, with presenter Faye Dunaway initially announcing La La Land as the 2017 Best Picture winner before Moonlight was revealed as the actual winner. That surprise conclusion was one worthy of the cinematic master of twist endings, M. Night Shyamalan, who just so happened to claim the Oscars’ ending as his own on social media:

Some folks, however, figured out Shyamalan’s joke a few minutes before the director did:

Ultimately, though, pretty much all of Twitter made the Shyamalan connection — or, at least enough to have his name trending on the social media platform on Sunday night:

For what it’s worth, Oscars organizers later apologized for the Moonlight/La La Land flub, writing in a statement that “the presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope.”

“We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred,” the statement read. “We appreciate the grace with the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
