Imagine if ‘Downton Abbey’ were on Spike TV. ‘SNL’ did.


There are some people who believe that Saturday Night Live should stop doing so many skits and instead increase the number of pop culture spoofs of mock commercials, movie trailers and political ads. That school of thought got a hearty endorsement last night when the show came up with a fanciful conceit: What would happen if the raucous frat-boy channel Spike TV was carrying the tray of Wedgwood China we call Downton Abbey. How would they promote the series?

It would probably look and sound a lot like this.

Oh, the Dowager will not be pleased. I must take issue with one joke. There is far, far, far more eavesdropping in the pilot of Smash, which debuts tomorrow on NBC, than there is in two seasons of Abbey.
