ABC has ordered the pilot for a spinoff of The Goldbergs, reports Variety.
Set in the Quaker school known on The Goldbergs as William Penn Academy, the new show would take place in the '90s.
Last month, just before submitting the script to ABC, Jenkintown's Adam F. Goldberg, whose show draws heavily from his childhood, said the spinoff would be based on the faculty of Penn Charter, from which Goldberg graduated in 1994. Gym teacher Rick Mellor, the character Bryan Callen plays on The Goldbergs, would be a major character, he said. (Variety reports that the show may also include Tim Meadows as school guidance counselor Andre Glascott, depending on the future of his Fox show, Son of Zorn.)
It's "about all the teachers I had," said Goldberg, who wrote the pilot script with Marc Firek. "Right now, Beverly [his mother, who's played by Wendi McLendon-Covey] is scripted to be in the show, so there is a lot of crossover with The Goldbergs."
