Source confirm that pop star Britney Spears will leave "The X-Factor" after only one season. "The X-Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell hired Spears to reinvigorate ratings of his singing competition, a major hit in his native Britain and internationally but only a lukewarm success over here. Spears, who was reportedly pulling down $15 million for her work on the show, received tepid reviews for her unengaged performance as a judge and the show actually dipped in ratings from its first season. A source told Us Weekly that Cowell "wanted crazy Britney, but he got boring Britney."

Recently, at the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles, Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said he was pleased with Spears' performance but left her spot at the judges' table open. "I thought it went very, very well. I think Britney did a really good job. She tucked in really nicely on that bench. For next year, I don't know," Reilly told critics.

Spears was an interesting test case for the celebrity judge on singing reality competitions. Shows like "American Idol" and "The X-Factor" started snapping up high profile judges after the success of NBC's "The Voice," featuring Maroon 5's Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo and Blake Shelton. For "The X-Factor," former Disney gal Demi Lovato sat alongside Spears, while "American Idol" hired Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, whose off-camera feud may overshadow the actual singing competition at hand.

Spears' exit from "The X-Factor" may signal that it's not the famous faces on the judging panel that bring in the ratings, but the style of the competition itself. Last week, we predicted celebrity judges would be bloated busts year for singing shows in 2013.

Judge L.A. Reid also announced he would be leaving "The X-Factor" this year, leaving only Cowell and Lovato on the judges' bench.
