The riveting L.A. cop show returns for a fourth season

Best cop show on TV? ‘Southland’ returns tonight

Southland started out as an NBC series and got a second life on cable. Thank the coaxial Gods because this is the best cop show on TV. Here’s a preview of the season four premier which TNT presents tonight at 10 p.m.

What’s new? Well, several months have elapsed. Officer Cooper (Michael Cuditz) has detoxed from pain killers, gotten his back operated on and is returning to duty.

Did you catch his partner? That’s Lucy Liu as Officer Jessica Tang. The notorious video she refers to? You’ll get to see it before the epsiode is over.

Sammy (Shawn Hatosy) is back in uniform and riding with Ben (Ben McKenzie). And Detective Adams (Regina King) has a new partner. No surprise there. Lydia’s partners are like the drummers in Spinal Tap: they don’t seem to last long.

And Dewey (C. Thomas Howell) is still around, as offensive as ever. There’s also a great guest turn by Lou Diamond Phillips.

There’s a good deal of crime in the hour. But Southland’s finest are just as concerned with getting to the hot new food truck before it folds up for the day.

Did I mention prime time’s coolest theme music?
