Ann Curry's tearful farewell to 'Today'
The co-host steps down during the show
Ann Curry’s tearful farewell to ‘Today’
David Hiltbrand, Inquirer TV Critic
When it came time for Ann Curry to announce it was her “last morning as co-host of Today” on air this morning, she couldn’t even get through the first sentence before her voice caught and her eyes started to well.
She apologized for “wearing her heart on her sleeve” during her farewell speech. Of course that came as no surprise to viewers. Curry has always been a uniquely emotional and empathetic news personality, a quality that some found endearing and others found mawkish. Here is her announcement.

Curry’s gracious valedictory ended a long week of speculation that NBC was negotiating for ways to remove her from the chair at Today and install another female co-host in time to have the show running smoothly during NBC’s Olympic coverage which begins in a few weeks.
Curry alluded to “a fancy new title” with NBC News and described a job that sounded very much like an international correspondent. "For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker,” she said, “I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line but, man, I did try."
Now the countdown begins to the announcement of Matt Lauer’s new morning partner. Savannah Guthrie? Hoda Kotb? Stay tuned.
Shortly after Curry’s tearful resignation, Lauer introduced this clip tribute to Curry, “highlights of the woman and journalist”

Not pretty enough and NBC showed no class or character in firing her....But they will put a pretty plastic head in her place....and hopefully they will fail miserably in the ratings.....They have no concern for quality, truth or character... nuggett
All of a sudden, the home town team at fox 29 look better and better. After 20 plus years watching the today show it is time to move over to one of those other networks. I love Ann Curry, smart, articulate, beautiful inside and out.... Valkelly
Matt Lauer is a tool.. I would have replaced him a long time ago.. Curry was the bright-spot of the show.. USAFirst1
I like Ann's international coverage and role on Dateline more than her doing the dog and pony show at the anchor desk. I started watching Good Morning America about 6 months ago. I just like GMA better, but to each his own. carmendmv
i won't be watching today anymore. it's lost it's class and good judgement. etbarksdale
This is a sad day for American television. The reassignment of Ann Curry, one the most heartfelt and real co-anchors the Today Show has ever had, is a travesty. We deserve to know why this is happening. One is forced to doubt the decision-making ability of NBC, and whether they will manage to hold on for dear life.
Such are the bitter affairs of watching our heroes go up in flames…
