4.2 million tune in for 'Downton Abbey' premiere

PBS, the Broadcast Network That Does Not Care About Ratings, cares today.

Sunday's season premiere of the second season of "Downton Abbey" on "Masterpiece Classic" averaged 4.2 million viewers, reports the network today. That's more than twice its prime-time average. The premiere was also up 18 percent in metered-market ratings from the show's debut a year ago.

And, no, that doesn't count those of you who watched online or on, say, your iPads.

According to PBS, last year's season premiere was streamed more than 400,000 times when first released and has accumulated more than a million streams. And it reminds us that "both seasons can be purchased on shoppbs.org and on iTunes, though since it'll be on your actual TV set every Sunday through Feb. 19, you shouldn't feel obligated.
