Morning show war: Palin to co-host ‘Today’

Palin moves to the morning arena. Watch out, Ann Curry.

It’s like an early morning Game of Thrones.

Good Morning America brings out Katie Couric to co-host its wakeup program this week, hoping to steal the thunder from perennial morning queen, Today. Couric, of course, was a popular co-host of Today before jumping to anchor the CBS Evening News. Couric’s new afternoon talk show will roll out on ABC stations in the fall.

Although claiming to be a bit “rusty” as she sat next to George Stephanopoulos this morning, she looked quite natural supplanting Robin Roberts. Her “Backstage Pass” report from Dancing with the Stars? Now that was rusty. Here are Katie's opening moments.

Today was not talking this challenge laying down. Last night it proclaimed on its website that it would have Sarah Palin as a co-host on Tuesday, a bit of stunt-casting so bold that many people assumed it was an April Fools prank by NBC. Palin is employed as a commentator by Fox News.

But Matt Lauer confirmed the appearance this morning in an on-air telephone interview with the former Republican vice presidential candidate and hockey mom. Here’s the clip.

Nice zinger by Matt about the newspapers, bringing us full circle back to Couric. It’s a reference to the fateful interview during the 2008 campaign that many analysts cite as a disastrous turning point for Palin. But it’s a visiting Meredith Vieira who gets off the sharpest lines.

By the way, you don’t have to get up early for Palin’s appearance. She won’t be joining Matt until 8 a.m. Apparently she’s still on Alaska time.
