The Roots mural makes its debut next week

Last year, a blank wall on a corner of Broad and South streets began to transform into a mural dedicated to one of Philadelphia's most legendary bands: The Roots. The band’s connection with the city runs deep and it was only a matter of time before they received such an honor.

Mural Arts, who commissioned the piece, continues to redefine perceptions of murals and claims that this is their most ambitious project yet. Launched in the fall of 2011, this multifaceted project included a talk back lecture series, “Roots 101” curriculum for youth in the Mural Arts Program’s Art Education Program, and citywide engagement via paint days.

The Roots are no stranger when it comes to working with the Mural Arts Program. Questlove collaborated with the organization back in 2011, narrating a special tour that highlighted iconic African American murals.

The colorful mural was designed by Tatyana Faza and implemented by Amber Art & Design.

To help celebrate this historic day in Philadelphia’s history, Questlove, Black Thought and the rest of The Roots crew will come together for the mural’s dedication on Friday, May 31 at 11:30 am at World Communications Charter School on 512 S. Broad Street. Jane Golden, director of the Mural Arts, and Mayor Nutter will also be in attendance. The event is free and open to the public.

Don't forget, the day after the mural dedication, June 1, is the 6th annual Roots Picnic. Tickets are still available.

Now enjoy this very fitting song by The Roots.
