The long strained struggle of Russian punk group, Pussy Riot, has been making news headlines for a long time.
In fact, there has been an up rise in news this week concerning imprisoned member Maria Alekhina and her week long hunger strike that resulted in a rushed trip to the hospital.
Three members of the band—Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich—were convicted last year of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" for an impromptu punk protest against Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral and given two-year sentences.
Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer is the HBO documentary that follows the arrest and trial of all three members tailing their protest. Shadowing in the footsteps of the doc will be an unaffiliated book titled Let’s Start a Pussy Riot, which is “an exploration of the concept of Future Feminism, asking how we can move forward and unite different voices and generations to create an inspiring dialogue.”
The HBO documentary premieres on June 10th and the book will be launched at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival on June 14th. You can watch the trailer for the film below.
