Blake Shelton was the big winner at the Country Music Association awards show in Nashville last night. The 6 foot 5 Oklahoman reaped the rewards of representing the genre on the ABC hit reality show The Voice in taking home the top Entertainer of The Year award, as well as male vocalist and song of the year for "Over You" which he wrote with his wife, Miranda Lambert.
Shelton accepted the award for "Over You," which is on Lambert's album Four The Record, with his singer spouse, who also won female vocalist of the year, beating out co-hostess Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Martin McBride and Kelly Clarkson. (Really, Kelly Clarkson?)
In picking up the "Over You" award, Shelton gave a gut-wrenching speech about writing the song about his late brother Richie. "I lost my brother in a car wreck when I was 14 years old, and when I got older and wanted to be a country singer my Dad always said, 'Son, you should write a song about your brother," he said. Shelton's father died earlier this year.
Eric Church won album of the year honors for "Chief," and performed his hit "Springsteen" on the show, inserting a snippet of "Born To Run" into the tune. Taylor Swift was shut out, losing in all three categories she was nominated in. Appropriately enough, Willie Nelson recieved the first ever Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement award.
