Where in Philly M. Night Shyamalan filmed ‘Split’

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Split, hits theaters Friday, and as in most of Shyamalan's movies, Philly plays a prominent role.

A followup to Shyamalan’s 2014 supernatural thriller The Visit, Split brought the director back home to the Philadelphia area for filming that started in November 2015.

In addition to shooting at Aston's Sun Center Studios, Shyamalan’s production brought film crews to locations such as the King of Prussia Mall, 30th Street Station, and the Philadelphia Zoo. The result is a dark, eerie depiction of some well-known Philadelphia-area landmarks that is somehow both spooky and pride-inducing.

The film stars X-Men: Days of Future Past’s James McAvoy as Kevin, a man with 23 alternate personalities who kidnaps a group of three friends out for a day at the mall. Kevin keeps the trio locked in a windowless room, where he displays his various personalities. Kevin’s mind houses a mysterious 24th personality known as the “beast” that threatens to emerge as the film progresses.

Split premiered at Fantastic Fest last September, with a subsequent screening at AFI Fest in Hollywood in November. Our critic's take: "Shyamalan is back!"
