VIDEO: Sleek dystopia in first trailer for 90s young adult favorite 'The Giver'

If you were in middle or high school in the mid-90s to early 2000s, you probably remember the utopian-clothed dystopia Lois Lowry created in 1993's The Giver. With pain and sadness eradicated, Lowry takes us on a journey that makes us realize experiencing those things are what makes us human in the first place. Now, though, Lowry's story is coming to the big screen, and the first trailer has upped that anticipation even more.

If you were in middle or high school in the mid-90s to early 2000s, you probably remember the utopian-clothed dystopia Lois Lowry created in 1993’s The Giver. With pain and sadness eradicated, Lowry takes us on a journey that makes us realize experiencing those things are what makes us human in the first place. Now, though, Lowry’s story is coming to the big screen, and the first trailer has upped that anticipation even more.

Having premiered in an abbreviated form on the Today show this morning, the first trailer from The Giver is loaded with A-listers like Katei Holmes, Meryl Streep, Taylor Swift, Alexander Skarsgård, and The Giver himself, Jeff Bridges. And, what’s more, it appears that the film is in full color, a deviation from the novel where the characters perceive their world in only black and white. So, basically, there’s almost no reason for middle school kids to pick the book up again.

For the uninitiated, The Giver follows protagonist Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who inhabits a world that’s initially presented as utopian, but quickly is revealed as a dystopia. There is no war, pain, or suffering, and everyone is the same. However, The Giver (Bridges) opens Jonas’ eyes after the community selects the boy to absorb the old man’s memories—primarily because The Giver is the only living person who has known and understood pain.

The Giver is set for an August 15 release. Until then, though, check out the trailer below:
