You might recognize him from this goofy Tabu ad, or perhaps one of his many roles at the the Walnut Street Theatre or the Arden, but soon, you won’t be able to see Philly boy and Girls alum Evan Jonigkeit as anything other than The Toad. Word is he’s nabbed the sleeper favorite role for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The cast for the upcoming X-Men film is currently massive, with big names like Ian McKellan, Jennifer Lawrence, and Hugh Jackman already attached. Now, though, the X-Men cast is getting a little Philly flavor thanks to Jonigkeit, who will reboot Toad’s role as a younger version of the character formerly played by Ray Park.
The franchise hasn’t seen toad since Halle Berry blew him up in the first X-Men film way back in 2000. Sealed by Storm’s great “do you know what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?” quip, Toad’s fate was apparently to fall off our radar, up until now. Which is to say, that ought to give Jonigkeit ample room to add his own signature to the character.
“The aesthetics of the character are much different, and I’m not really allowed to say a whole lot more than that,” he said in an interview with MTV. “It’s darker. I would say it’s a darker tone.”
So, essentially, we’re going to get a gritty reboot of an otherwise throwaway character. And, boy, if you’re looking for grit, a Philly actor ought to be able to provide it for you.
Check out Jonigkeit when X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23.
