Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was widely loved by comic fans everywhere, but at least one star thinks he could have done it in a gutsier, more mind-blowing way. But, unfortunately for Nicholas Cage and Tim Burton, “mind-blowing” doesn’t always mean “better.”

Cage sat down with Metro UK this week to discuss, among other things, the unrealized siren song that is the Tim Burton Superman movie. Back in the 90s, Burton signed on to do a Superman movie dubbed Superman Lives which would feature Nic Cage as the Man of Steel himself. The project was ultimately scrapped, but photos of Cage in a mocked-up Superman suit have since hit the web and became the stuff of internet legend.

Which, of course, explained why Metro UK had to ask about the project. Cage, for his part, appears to be holding out hope:

“Pictures of you dressed as Superman for Tim Burton’s aborted movie surfaced online. How close did you come to making the film?

Very close. Look, I’m not going to be one of these guys that’s going to be, like, lamenting things. But is Tim Burton one of my favourite directors? Yes. Did I see some of the drawings of where he wanted to go? Yes. And I will tell you, they were fantastic and it would have been a mind-blowing experience. Did I have a concept of how to play the character? Yes, and I can tell you it would have been gutsy. So maybe Warner Brothers got scared because they had two artists that weren’t afraid to take chances.”

See that? Another artist’s vision crippled by the bigwigs in Hollywood. But given that Cage is evidently immortal, he still might get the chance to don the blue cowl yet. And “mind-blowing” will be one way to describe it.

Another way would be “ridiculous.”
