North Philly-born and raised rapper Meek Mill is suing Philadelphia and its police Officers Andre Boyer and Michael Vargas in Federal Court for falsely imprisoning the Maybach Music Group member for nine hours and posting pictures of him while he was in custody to Instragram.
The complaint states that officers Boyers and Vargas stopped Mill at 11th and Girard while he was driving his Range Rover on October 31st of last year.
The complaint continues:
"Following the vehicle stop, police officers Boyer and Vargas handcuffed plaintiff at the scene, transported him in custody to the 22nd Police District, took photographs of plaintiff which the officers posted and published, or caused to be posted and published, on Instagram and other social media websites, depicting plaintiff in police custody, held plaintiff in custody against his will in a jail cell for approximately nine (9) hours, after which time plaintiff was released on November 1, 2012, at 4:30 a.m., without being charged with any criminal activity and having caused plaintiff to miss a scheduled promotional appearance in Atlanta, Georgia."
Mill, whose given name is Robert Williams, is seeking compenstation and punitive damages for missing the promo appearance and losing the deposit on the private jet he chartered to take down to Atlanta, as well as costs of "the loss of numerous sponsorships and endorsements; the loss of plaintiff's solitude, seclusion and privacy; the anxiety and embarrassment associated with plaintiff being placed in a false light; and the anxiety and embarrassment of being seized, detained, confined and imprisoned against plaintiff's will."
Mill was tethered to Philly recently, after a judge ordered he not leave the city due to parole violations.
The Philadelphia Police Department gave us a "no comment" when we called because it involves open litigation. We have calls in to Mill's representation and will update with their comments.
A Starpulse report from last November pulled some of Mill's tweets from after the incident:
"cops cost me a lot of money tonight .....taking pics (pictures) of me like I'ma f**kin joke....no charges just holding me for s**t! my lawyer need answers."He continued to protest his innocence on Thursday morning, insisting he had done nothing wrong, adding, "I ain't get locked up...definitely not in NYC with no gun! Cops just harassed and violated me last night in Philly just for being famous!"
And Mill, whose album artwork features a Rolex watch attached to one half of a handcuff, saw the irony of his police run-in, adding: "The crazy part about (it) is I really had a handcuff and Rolex on my wrist yesterday.... Really".
They made me miss my flight to North Borneo! orange rhino
I wonder what he did to get arrested in the first place. Danie|
I hope he wins. To hell with the Fraternal order of Pigs Bradley85
Being on Parole doesn't preclude an American citizen from the basic protections and guarantees of the U.S Constitution and Forth Amendment.
For crying out loud, despite the objections of the white majority Black People in America are also protected under the U.S Constitution. Dexter
This was Phila Police Kidnapping a young black man driving a $85,000 vehicle. The police violated the man's civil rights which is a federal crime in America.
This isn't activity recorded in North Korea, this was in North Philly.
He just happens to have enough money to have legal counsel on retainer.
Amendment IV
Search and arrest
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

has anyone outside of Philly ever heard of this guy? ekw555
Racial profiling is real but this wasn't the case. If your on parole, your on parole for reason. He's mad because he lost out on money and now Philly will have to pay for it. As for other dumb cops posting to social networking sites, they should know better. Celebrity should never effect your professionalism. PhillySophistication
this guy is a thug with a criminal past and his music stinks ...i am a purchaser for a music store and it was my pleasure to not order his CD for the store. sincere;y twitter.com/dannyozark danny ozark

why so much hate towards this man? most of the people making smart remarks probably never been pulled over by the police for no reason before, or been told "you dont look like you can afford that car" smh profiling is real and it happens everyday!! FRESH_SP
I love all the haters on here. Non-stop hate all the time. DelcoSchmelco- meek's not hard to hate. total opportunist who sells poison to kids. consider philly does lead the country in murder. the man glorifies it. see very little redeeming value to his music unlike Nas or PE.

mills is lucky he's not in jail already psualum- Just as I have exhorted another fellow psu alum, we are not in a position to be judgmental. Our university harbored a child predator for over a decade.

The police have every right to stop and detain this guy because he is a ward of the Parole Board. stryke2
Getting falsely imprisoned overnight then filing a lawsuit about it is probably way more PR in the long run than spending a couple late hours in an Atlanta club. Bill_Brahsky
Jail isn't cred to hip hop guys any more. Contrary to what people think, they have actually become more conscious of branding and realize that jail hurts business. MrJayScott
He's suing them? He should be sending a thank you note as this ups his cred in the biz he's in. maldorer
