Local actress Maria Bello comes out in New York Times column

In last week’s Modern Love column, Norristown-born actress Maria Bello revealed she has a longtime girlfriend, and shared with readers the experience of coming out to her 12-year-old son and the rest of her ‘large, Italian-Polish, “traditional” Philadelphia family’.

Bello is best known for her roles in Coyote Ugly, and The Cooler. The 46-year-old actress became a humanitarian after co-founding WE ADVANCE, a women’s rights organization based in Haiti.

Bello’s column was inspired by a conversation with Jackson, the son she shares with TV executive Dan McDermott. When Jackson became curious about her love life, she decided to come out to him.

“I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son.”

In the raw and heartfelt piece, the actress-turned-activist explored partnership, sexuality, and trust.

"My feelings for Clare aren’t the same as the butterflies-in-the-stomach, angst-ridden love I have felt before; they are much deeper than that."

Jackson’s response? “Mom, love is love, whatever you are,”

Writes Bello, “Whomever I love, however I love them, whether they sleep in my bed or not, or whether I do homework with them or share a child with them, “love is love.” And I love our modern family."
