Bryn Mawr's Ali Velshi out at CNN, in at Al Jazeera America

POSTED: Friday, April 5, 2013, 11:02 AM

The "Hairless Prophet of Doom," as he is known to Jon Stewart, won't be on CNN come Friday. Bryn Mawr-based Ali Velshi, CNN’s chief business correspondent, is leaving CNN after 12 years at the 24/7 news network.

As initially reported earlier today by The New York Times, Velshi confirmed for me that he's joining Al Jazeera America. But he's not leaving his home in Bryn Mawr and the new gig may even allow him more time to enjoy Philly, he said.

"l'll probably spend more time in Bryn Mawr. CNN had become all-consuming. I was doing economics, weather," Velshi told me this evening. "This will probably mean more family time and more Philly time, which is nice."

Velshi regularly appeared CNN's business programming, hosting weekend program "Your Money," among other duties. But Velshi also reported on such international events as the assassination Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto and Hurricane Sandy.

EARLIER: The New York Times' Brian Stelter announced that Velshi is the first hire at Al Jazeera America. Al Gore recently sold his cable network, Current, over to Al Jazeera, which is expected to launch in the first half of 2013.

ALSO EARLIER: TV Newser had more details for Velshi's new venture. Velshi will host a "half-hour 'magazine-style' show" that will start weekly and expand to five nights a week.

He must be another crook if he is going on the crook Al Gore's channel. Al Gore profited hundreds of millions off global warming and contributes to it with all the energy he wastes on his mansions and lavish lifestyle. Trifling.

Well, at least now this country will actually see how much of terrorist state Israel is. About time their human rights atrocities were exposed. Just the other side of the terrorist coin - worse than the Palestinians, one of the most brutalized people on the planet.

I am not an Al Gore fan, I am a fan of capitalism. The guy owned an asset and had the right to sell it for the highest possible price. Arab money is dumb money. No one is going to watch this network. They way over paid and will lose their shirts. It will fade into the woodwork. Ali Velshi has the right to work for anyone he wants to, also. It's America. But Ali was very, very bias on CNN. His business reporting was sometimes absolutely over the top in favor of more government regulation and interference with business. It's one reason why CNN's ratings continue to suffer. I wish that CNN would be a centralist voice. It's an important voice with tremendous news gathering abilities. But look at the line up--Anderson Cooper, Piers Morgan, Soledad O'Brien, a disproportional amount of their coverage is pro left programs, initiatives, people, etc. They often stack their panels with Obama apologists and then insert a Republican foil just to make it look like they are impartial. So it's no wonder that the new Arab network would target one of the most liberal voices in business reporting to be their first hire. He will side with the Arab view of the world, against Israel and the Conservatives that support her. It is a brilliant, safe move for a propaganda machine like Al Jazeera. But the network will not do well and Ali's reputation will forever suffer because of his decision to leave CNN--but that's his right to do so also.

@tynol 10, funny that you would write all that you did simply because you assumed that my TV habits include Fox News and the Republican brand. You assumed wrong. My comment had everything to do with my distaste for this man's programs and recent appearances on CNN and that was it. You really jumped ahead of yourself this time, my friend.

Lol. He had a big audience on CNN. More people than fix which no one watches and has been proven to make you LESS intelligent.

This guy is a great reporter and I wish him the best. At least he's not on the side of the repubs that stand for decaying roads and bridges, segregation, and massive defects. It's sad to see so many once smart people being sucked into this repub echo chamber of lies and nonsense that they just believe all republican garbage and it's just not true. Only a truly intelligent person is able to see thru the fog and haze the repubs put up and find out that the fog and haze they breathe in is just a bunch of lies and nonsense. It takes intelligence to admit to yourself that yes, dems are moving us forward.

Which is to move our country forward rather than back towards unnecessary wars, segregation, and massive defects as well as decaying infrastructure which the repubs stand for.

Gore is a loser all he's ever accomplished is:

    Vietnam vet
    Representative
    Senator
    Vice President
    Presidential candidate
    Winner of a Nobel prize
    Winner of an academy award

Yep, a real loser. He's not accomplished much that's for sure.

CNN and Al Jazeera are both corporate propaganda outlets. They don't hire journalists. They hire media driven puppets. This is another Republicratic move.
