It’s hard to tell if Kate Gosselin’s 13-year-old daughters, Mady and Cara, are terrified of their mother or just very shy on (live) camera.

The reality TV star momma has been speaking out recently on the public’s perception of the Kate Plus 8 family. Thursday morning, on the Today show, she brought along her two eldest children for an interview.

The beginning of the interview, with host Savannah Guthrie, starts out rough when the girls are asked how they are doing. Mady takes her time before replying, but before that Kate butts in to remind her: “Mady… your words. It’s your chance. Spit it out.”

The Today host then moves her question over to Cara, who is even more silent than her sister. Totally baffled by their lack of response, Kate immediately blurts out, “This is the most wordless I've heard them all morning. I don't want to speak for them but, Mady, go ahead. Sort of the things that you said in [People] magazine, that years later they're good, they're fine. Go for it, it's your chance."

Momma Goss continued to be a control freak for the rest of the interview, clearly a bit embarrassed by her daughters.

Kate, Cara, and Mady graced the cover of People magazine this month. Inside, they dished on what their life is really like:

"People expect us to be damaged," Cara says, as Mady joins in: "People think we're supposed to be messed up, like, 'Oooooh, the poor Gosselin kids, they're going to be scarred for life, waaaaah.' Here's the big news: we're not messed up."

What they are, however, is outspoken and ready to set the record straight on surviving their parents' bitter split, starring on a hit reality show, and the biggest issue they're still grappling with (hint: it involves six 9-year-olds with whom they share a house.) And when it comes to mom Kate, they aren't shy with their opinions.
