There will be no slapping of behinds in this courtroom.
A plea deal requesting no jail time for former NFL star Chad Johnson was rejected Monday after Broward County Judge Kathleen McHugh witnessed Johnson playfully slapping his attorney's behind in court.
The room responded to the affectionate tap in laughter, although the judge was not amused. A fuming McHugh told Johnson he was not taking things seriously enough and rejected the deal.
"I don't know that you're taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?" she said, as she slapped the documents outlining the plea deal down on her desk. "The whole courtroom was laughing. I'm not going to accept these plea negotiations," she said. "This isn't a joke."
"This is your courtroom. I have no intent to make this a joke. It's not funny," he told her. "My life is in a shambles right now and I try my best to laugh and keep a smile on my face."
McHugh, unmoved by Johnson's apology, ultimately stood her ground and rejected the deal. He was then handcuffed and later tweeted, "Love me through the good and the bad because I'm gone love you regardless... See you in 30..."
Johnson, who was in court after violating probation in a domestic violence case involving his ex-wife and reality TV star Evelyn Lozada, was sentenced to 30 days behind bars. His probation was also extended three months until December 2013, and he has been ordered to undergo additional hours therapy and community service.
