Atlanta judge slams Allen Iverson's parenting skills

POSTED: Sunday, February 3, 2013, 11:12 AM
Philadelphia 76ers Allen Iverson heads back downcourt after the Sixers were called for an offensive foul on the New York Knicks during the fourth quarter in NBA basketball action Friday, March 31, 2006, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Sixers won, 117-112. (AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

An Atlanta judge put Allen Iverson in time out for his subpar parenting skills. Former Sixers great Iverson officially split from Tawanna Iverson a couple weeks ago, but TMZ has details on Iverson's custody agreement and the judge doesn't mince words when it comes to Iverson's parental history.

From TMZ:

[Iverson] does not know how to manage the children; has little interest in learning to manage the children and has actually, at times, been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development.
For example, he has refused to attend to an obvious and serious alcohol problem, which has caused him to do inappropriate things in the presence of the children while impaired. He has left the children alone without supervision.
He has left his young daughters in a hotel room with men who are unknown to the mother.

Tawanna has full custody of the kiddies, while Iverson has visitation rights, although he has to abide by strict rules, including abstaining for alochol for 18 months (after the period is over, he can't drink for 24 hours of seeing his kids), attending AA meetings and seeing a shrink.

Tawanna and Allen have five children together and had been married since 2001.

Recently, Iverson has sought to rejoin the Sixers, but Bob Cooney thinks that Iverson should keep his memory intact, but remaining a memory.

Just a typical ghetto thug that happened to be able to throw a ball through a hoop better than most. Now that those days are over he most likely will end up in jail or dead.

So what's new here? Iverson never had a real home life himself. His Mother was not much older than he, and from what I understand, her parental skills left a lot to be desired. Where Allen's Daddy? His Mother may not know either, in fact she may not be sure who Allen's Daddy is.

I read an article which claimed some sort of trust ( $32M) had been setup for Iverson during his playing days and basically, he was limited to withdrawing $1M per year from that setup. Even figuring current very low interest rates and then high income tax bracket rates, compounding should allow for that fund to be there for a very long time.

But maybe AI's lawyers/agents found a way around that and he's already run through the money, or maybe Tawanna figures he will find a way to get to it, so she's settling for $3M now.

I've posted before that it's going to end badly for AI: financial problems, troubles with the IRS, no place for him to work, etc. At some point, he'll take on the victim role and blame everyone else. I agree with a couple of other posters re: his background and lack of parental role models (which includes his mother)...but at some point, you need to man-up and do it for your kids/family. Keep making excuses for people in similar situations and you become an enabler for their behavior.

When he was making billions of dollars for the NBA in tickets sales and merchandise they tolerated his behavior. That was the time the league should have sat him down and set some guidelines. He was exploited and used from the first time he bounced a basketball. he was told he was a star from the age of 10 years old and he never had to grow-up. now because he never learned proper decision making skills he's criticizes and laughed at.How many of you could come from his background, born in the projects, single mother, thrown in jail, placed on Georgetown univ, drafted number #1, given millions of dollars and succeed all at the age of 21

I know this guy is a bad father. Maybe it's the example that his father set for him that he is following. Opps, his dad wasn't around; didn't provide for the family; nowhere to be found. So here you have a guy that grew up in the streets, barely a parent around, and you expect him to be the model of parenting. Are people really that stupid. He doesn't know how to be a good father and that's not surprising. The fact that people think he would be is more surprising to me. And I don't care how many parenting classes you take, that's not going to make you a real parent. What this guy needs is to learn how to be a functioning adult; something that giving you millions of dollars doesn't do. Maybe he needs better people around him or maybe he just needs to set up his alimony and child support; but what he doesn't need is a bunch of people trying to judge him when their lives are all together.

Don't worry, AI somehow spent it all, or close to it. Could he have actually gone thru $500m? Sure looks that way. Believe Yawanna managed to stash a few mill along the way.

P.S. the guy that compared Desean Jackson to AI is an idiot. There's no comparison at all. Desean, although may be immature and stubborn, has NEVER done the things me, myself and Iverson has done. Desean gives of his time endlessly to battle bullying and provide hope to so many hopeless. Use the comments section to take any and all necessary shots, just know what you are talking about.

Let's be honest. More than likely this isn't going to have a happy ending. He didn't want to take responsibility in his twenties. He doesn't want to do it now. If he wasn't a talented basketball player he'd be someone that we never heard of.

Iverson earned over $154 Million dollars just from basketball. Hard to believe one man can waste that much money, but he seems to have accomplished that task. A $3 Million dollar divorce is cheap.

Unfortunatly, you don't have to be mature to father a child. Children having children is a never ending cycle. Iverson's mother gave birth at age 15 and his father was never in the picture. You do, what you know! You reap what you sow!

Tawanna settled for $3,000,000? Iverson was making over $20,000,000 a year. How can you spend that much money? You can take them out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of them. Gotta spend every last dollar!!
