Sylvester Stallone is hoping to expand The Expendables movies by creating spin-offs for individual characters.

The Rocky star co-writes the action films and helps recruit the cast to play an elite team of mercenaries who embark on perilous missions. Stallone hopes to keep the franchise going for as long as possible and dreams of expanding the brand by giving some characters their own films. He tells WENN, "We'd like to just continue this because it's an ongoing experiment. We have great franchises with the (superhero movie) Avengers and all these situations where they branch off and do other things. I'd love to see some of these characters... all do their own movies, I know that may be a pipe dream, where they come together for the big festival of violence, but that would be the idea. It all depends on this one but I could definitely see one maybe two more and then... you never know."

A female version of the films, currently dubbed The Expendables, is currently in the works and Stallone and his producer Avi Lerner are considering which actresses to get onboard the project. Lerner says, "We are finalizing the script. We've got loads of ideas who is (sic) going to be the action movie star ladies and we plan to do it (at the) beginning of next year."

The Expendables 3, which introduces Kellan Lutz, Harrison Ford and Wesley Snipes to the team, hits cinemas on August 15.
