Laverne Cox becomes first transgender on TIME magazine cover

Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox has become the first transgender person to land the cover of TIME magazine, a month after fans protested her omission from the publication's annual list of 100 Most Influential People.

The actress graces the front of the magazine's upcoming issue for a cover story titled "The Transgender Tipping Point," in which Cox is interviewed about her personal journey as well as her fight for transgender rights. But just last month, editors revealed the list of the top 100 people making an impact on the world, and Cox did not make the list, despite fans voting for her inclusion en masse. Many readers were outraged, and campaigned for her to be added to the issue. Editors at Time had no comment on the matter, but Cox took to Twitter to show her gratitude for the groundswell of support, saying:

But now that the breakout star has landed her very own issue, Cox took to her Facebook page on Thursday to give her thanks yet again, and noted how groundbreaking the cover story is in terms of transgender rights history. She wrote, "What a wonderful bday (birthday) present! Yes today is my birthday and I am on the cover of TIME magazine. I realize this is way bigger than me and about a tipping point in our nation’s history where it is no longer acceptable for trans lives to be stigmatized, ridiculed, criminalized and disregarded. "This is for my trans siblings out there and for anyone who has ever been told that who you know yourself to be at your core is not legitimate. You are who you know yourselves to be."
