My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos is returning for a second installment of the romantic comedy, more than a decade after the original's release.
The independent film was a cult hit in 2002, and 12 years later, Vardalos, who penned the script about a woman from a Greek family who falls in love with an American man, has written a sequel. Vardalos is set to return as the main character Toula Portokalos, while her onscreen husband, played by John Corbett, is also slated to appear in the follow-up.
The actress says in a statement, "Now that I'm experiencing motherhood, I'm ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true."
The first movie earned Vardalos an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2002.
