Quentin Tarantino's copyright infringement lawsuit dismissed

Director Quentin Tarantino's copyright infringement lawsuit against bosses at Gawker Media has been dismissed by a federal judge in California.

The Pulp Fiction filmmaker decided to scrap plans to shoot his western The Hateful Eight in January (14) after an early draft of his screenplay hit the Internet without his permission. Editors at Gawker.com published a report about the leak, and shared links to other websites where the scripts had already been uploaded. Tarantino subsequently filed a lawsuit against executives at the website, accusing them of having "crossed the journalistic line by promoting itself to the public as the first source to read the entire screenplay illegally".

He was seeking actual and statutory damages, as well as at least $1 million in compensation. However, a month after Gawker executives filed a motion to dismiss the suit in March (14), a judge has sided with the website bosses in a ruling on Tuesday (22Apr14).

In the decision, the judge noted that the director had not presented a specific case of infringement as a result of Gawker editors' actions, therefore there is no solid evidence present in order to move forward with the case. Despite the dismissal, the judge did allow Tarantino to amend his infringement claim, which means he can refile the suit, but must do so by 1 May (14).

The news comes just days after Tarantino staged a live reading of the leaked scenes in Los Angeles alongside the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell.
