VH1 cancels 'Ev & Ocho' after its star Chad Johnson was arrested

Barely a month after his Independence Day wedding to Evelyn Lozada, NFL player Chad Johnson (the receiver formerly known as Ochocinco) this weekend was:
- Accused by his wife of cheating on her.
- Allegedly assaulted her during the heated argument.
- Was arrested and charged for domestic battery.
- Was fired by the Miami Dolphins.
- And his reality show was yanked by VH1.
And all that in just two days.
The six-time Pro Bowl player, who shared his romance with Lozada with the world on their VH1 reality show, Ev and Ocho, got into an argument with Lozada after she found a receipt in his car for condoms. According to a report by police in Broward County, Fla., obtained by TMZ, Lozada was so frightened of Johnson’s rage, she ran out of her house and sought refuge with a neighbor.
But not before she sustained what police describe as a three-inch laceration on her forehead, caused, according to Lozada when Johnson head-butted her. Her husband says it was the other way round: She head-butted him.
Johnson, 34, was held overnight and released Sunday morning on a $2,500 bond. A few hours later, he was fired by the Miami Dolphins. Yet Miami head coach Joe Philbin insists they team didn’t terminate Johnson’s contract because of the arrest. He says Johnson and the team weren’t a good fit.
“When he came in on June 11, we sat down and we talked,” Philbin tells ESPN.com. “I was very clear the expectations of the program, and it just didn’t work out. It’s more about the fit. In my gut, I didn’t feel the fit was going to be beneficial for either party in the short-term or long-term.”
Johnson hasn’t just lost his NFL job, he’s also been deprived of reality TV glory.
“Due to the unfortunate events over the weekend and the seriousness of the allegations,” VH1 says in a statement on its news blog, “VH1 is pulling the series ‘Ev and Ocho’ from its schedule and has no current plans of airing it.”
Ouch ...
The couple’s story seemed perfect for TV. Lozada already is known to reality fans from her previous VH1 reality series, Basketball Wives, which featured her long-term relationship with previous paramour, NBA star Antoine Walker.
No surprise then that VH1 quickly dreamed up a reality show about her courtship, engagement and wedding to Johnson. The New York Times says 11 episodes of Chad & Ev, already have been taped and the show was set to premiere on Sept. 3.
It’s difficult to gauge the potentially disastrous effects its cancelation will have on American culture.
