CNN suspends Roland Martin

Roland Martin, who is oft seen wearing an Ascot, launched his own line of fashionable Ascots in 2010.

CNN has suspended Roland Martin for making “regrettable and offensive” remarks demeaning gays on Super Bowl Sunday.

Shocking, no?

The cable news network actually acted after taking a demur three-day time-out.

“Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive,” CNN says in a statement.

“Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”

What exactly does it mean to be suspended from CNN? Will Roland be paid or not?

How long will his time-out last?

Will he be fired?

Will he receive a polite, coded message that he should cut his losses and resign?

Ironic that a man who built his entire career on being offended, failed to see how the politically correct wager can turn on a dime. If the shoe were reversed, there would be no suspension, it would have been an immediate dismissal and it should be an immediate dismissal. One's sword is normally the sword that strikes back.

Well GLAAD got what they wanted. Everyone will have to be on guard that a joke you make about someone dressing in a bizarre way (what straight or gay guy wears pink underwear?) will get you silenced and labeled. The cherry on top is GLAAD will get free air time plus they get to parade the smear victim around as their spokesperson to promote their agenda. Decisions like CNN's make us all weaker in society. Even if you think Roland is twerp, you should still be concerned that anybody can be shamed into getting fired—justified or not.

How ironic that yet another African-American male, a group historically discriminated against, is yet again lashing out at gays again. Most male homophobes are actually gay, and can't deal with it. See the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. 1996 Aug;105(3):440-5. Male homophobia is associated with homosexual arousal. Adams HE, Wright LW Jr, Lohr BA. Department of Psychology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602-3013, USA.

As a gay man, his comments don't offend me. Clearly, his audience within his tweets were his friends that get his sense of humor and arguably it was more that he was knocking David Beckham and also Pats fans, and emasculating other men who dress in pink, in jest should not be confused with homophobia. Roland Martin has a great track record as a smart reporter. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Although, lesson learned: If you are a CNN correspondent, thus you are a public person, so he should be more careful using social media. DAVID BECKHAM on the other hand--he's the spokesperson now of H&M? That Bangaleshi based, sweatshop that promotes unhealthy body types--him I find offensive.

The comments made here are the very reason he was suspended. He basically said beat someone. That is not acceptable for democrats, republicans or Christian

When will the gays get a grip on reality. Quit being so damned sensitive. I wonder if they pattern themselves after Joseph McCarthy from the 50's where there is a boogie man behind every tree. If the guy said something they don't like then CHANGE THE CHANNEL.

Its not reverse discrimination and its not because he's black. Discrimination is discrimination point blank. He said something GLAAD didn't approve of and I think they are making a big thing out of it but just because he's black...no no. Wait is he really black? LOL

I sometimes like Roland Martin's commentary, but sometimes he feels the need to debate with a fellow commentator just for the sake of debating(although some other news personalities behave similarly). Unfortunately, that was what he seemed to be doing here on twitter. Yes, he deserves a reprimand, because people could take what he said in a very bad way. Here's a question; why isn't "tweeting" coming into question here? Everyone says ridiculous things from time to time, but now Twitter is making sure the whole world knows.

Sorry, we in the LGBT community don't have to "get over it". How many straight teens commit suicide for being called fat, ugly, stupid, etc. How many youth are being beat up for being gay? Roland is a representative of the CNN Community and should be above the fray in name calling. Look at Pat Buchanan at MSNBC. These guys will wind up on Faux News anyway because they don't hire talented journalists.

Libs only support people of color, women, even gays when they aren't considered conservative and don't have (R) next to their names. The Lib media can say every demeaning word they want to about Republican candidates but don't even come anywhere close to the assumption of demeaning one of their protected Libby comrades!

Stereo-typing and making remarks that are meant to demean someone are certainly offensive; this is particularly true when it is coming from a formally respected member of a high profile media outlet.

Like hate crimes, liberals have very strict rules about who they apply to. A simple rule of thumb is if a conservative makes a perceived anti-black, anti-gay, anti-woman remark, it's a serious crime. If a liberal does it, no harm, no foul.

Roland, for your pennance double down on your conservative-bashing and an a few weeks, all will be fine. A little gay-bashing is excusable as long as you really beat up on the bad people.

as a black man, he should have known he was treading dangerously in one of the few places - the gay community - that is protected more than he is . Had Roland come out similarly against just plain old white folks, he'd be perfectly OK, and would have drawn rave reviews for being forthright and brave.

A man has to know his limitations. Even a black man.

Over-reaction by CNN, GLAAD. What he said was stupid, but hardly homophobic. Truth is, that Beckham ad was pretty foul. No one, not even my girlfriend, wanted to see his twigs and berries on TV.

How many times do we have to go over this? This is not a FREEDOM OF SPEECH issue! The police didn't arrest him. He is not on trial. He was suspended for doing something stupid and it was a BUSINESS DECISION on CNN's part! Why is it so damned difficult for people to get the issue of FREEDOM OF SPEECH in their damned heads? He had the FREEDOM OF SPEECH to say stupid stuff and people have the FREEDOM OF SPEECH to call him out on his stupidity and CNN had the FREEDOM to suspend him because of public outcry!

this is a non-event. he will be back on the air in record time. whatever he wrote or said, it will ultimately be tolerated and his suspension revoked, but not without CNN taking great pains to let all of us know how regrettable his actions were and how they would not be tolerated again. A public apology will be arranged and a show on diversity will be produced and aired, and he will come out the other end of this as a hero.

    Just watch.
