Does Kitty Softpaws deserve a knighthood?
That’s the question floating around the corridors of power in Paris following Sunday’s announcement that French president Nicolas Sarkozy plans to award the Légion d'Honneur to Puss in Boots star Salma Hayek, 45, elevating her to the rank of Chevalier or Knight.
Anonymous Source tells People Sarkozy will bestow the honor at a ceremony in the next two months at the French president’s official residence, the Palais de l'Élysée, a lovely palatial manse located near the Champs-Élysées.
It’ll be a “family affair” as People puts it: Salma’s multi-billionaire father-in-law, François Pinault, also will be at the ceremony – Sarkozy is gifting him France’s highest civilian decoration, the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor. A self-made man, Pinault is the founder of PPR, a multinational holding company which owns in part or in full luxury brands including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen,
FoxNews.com reports that naysayers in France are objecting that Hayek hasn’t achieved the sort of cultural or social achievement which merits such a hallowed award. (To be fair, Hollywood luminaries seem to be favored with the prize. Past honorees include Jerry Lewis, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Robert De Niro.)
Others say Sarkozy, is clearly mounting a vulgar PR move on the eve of France’s presidential elections by honoring a world-famous buxom star (FoxNews.com refers to Salma as buxom and busty) and one of France’s wealthiest and most powerful men in one stroke.
Yet others note that Sarkozy’s BFF is none other than Salma’s hub and François Pinault’s son, PPR CEO François-Henri Pinault.
The resistance to Salma’s receiving the honor isn’t all talk. FoxNews.com says former French budget minister Henri Torre also was awarded the Légion d'Honneur but has refused to accept, telling French weekly mag Marianne, “too many people were nominated who do not deserve to be honored.”
Salma, whose full name is Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez de Pinault, became engaged to François-Henri, 49, in March 2007. The couple welcomed a daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, in September 2007 and eventually wed on Valentine's Day 2009.
FoxNews.com adds a sort of snarky postscript noting that Hayek last month told BBC gabshow host Graham Norton that as a child she prayed to Jesus for large breasts.
“I went to a church that had a saint that was supposed to do a lot of miracles,” Hayek said on The Graham Norton Show.
“I put my hands in the holy water and went: Please Jesus give me some boobs.”
