Navigating the inaugural Philly Wine Week

The first-ever Philly Wine Week kicks off this Sunday, Mar. 23 and runs through next Sunday, Mar. 30. With dozens of events happening throughout the city, we’ve got your picks for the top palate-pleasing affairs that, by week’s end, hopefully won’t leave you too dizzy.

Get the week started with the “Bubbles and Barrels” opening party at Panorama Ristorante & Wine Bar in Old City on Sunday Mar. 23., beginning at 5 p.m. Sample local wines as well as champagne and sparkling wines from around the world.

All week long, South Street’s Jet Wine Bar will feature Philadelphia fare at their Local Lunches happening daily from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Get your soft pretzel fix as well as sip on $5 glasses of wine from area wineries. Vintage Wine Bar on South 13th is holding a week-long deal on wine and cheese pairings as well.

Know just what wine to pair with any meal at the German Society of Pennsylvania’s Wine: A Tasting Course, hosted by wine-author Marnie Old on Tuesday Mar. 25 beginning at 6:30 p.m. and running until 8:30 p.m.

Garces Trading Co. in Center City is holding a four course wine dinner on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 6 p.m. featuring wines from Decibel Vineyard, founded by Philadelphia’s own Daniel Brennan.

Get competitive while you drink at Bistro St. Tropez’s game night on Thursday, Mar. 27 from 6 p.m until 8 p.m. An assortment of board games will be featured, but if you find yourself longing for more fun, the event is BYOG (bring your own game). As far as the wine goes, enjoy a tasting selected by the resturanta's specialists.

For those with a sweet tooth, indulge at Barbuzzo on Friday, Mar. 28 at their all-day artisanal chocolate and wine tasting. Handmade in Philadelphia, the Marcie Blaine chocolates will be a welcome end to the work week.

History buffs can enjoy the taste of the origins of wine at Jet Wine Bar’s Georgia to Greece: Drinking through the Origins of Wine, hosted by Jill Weber, archaeologist and Jet Wine Bar’s owner. Guests will savor wines from the Republic of Georgia, Armenia, Lebanon and Greece at the hour-and-a-half event, starting at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday Mar. 29.

Show off your new found wine knowledge on Sunday, Mar. 30’s Wine Quizzo, happening at Cooperage Wine and Whiskey Bar from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Close out the week at Fairmount’s Alla Spina for its Philly Wine Week closing party at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 30.

Various bars and restaurants are also featuring wine specials throughout the week. From $5 Karamoor wines on-tap and $5 glasses of Sherry at Alla Spina to $5 daily featured wines at Cooperage Wine and Whiskey Bar and Tiffin Bistro, there’s something for everyone.
