Green Weekend reading

Here at the Daily News we have a soft spot for Mark Alan Hughes, a former columnist who is now Philadelphia's Director of Sustainability. He's also a columnist right here on philly.com Green, and this week's column is ripped from the day's headlines, making the argument that the Phillies may be the greenest team in Major League Baseball - and that maybe this accounts for their National League championship.

Of course, in his list of earth-friendly policies at Citizens Bank Park, Mr. Hughes neglects to mention the one that may wind up doing the most good - providing the public with serious veggie food options. You may recall that livestock is a bigger contributor to greenhouse gases than all human transport, so every veggie dog that replaces a meat-based one is helping fight global warming!

And following up on another earlier Earth to Philly post, there are a bunch of interesting events going on associated with Design Philadelphia (it's National Design Week), many of which hit on sustainability issues. The one in particular I'm thinking of is Craftadelphia, with its focus on handmade crafts, some creatively re-using discarded materials. The next Craftadelphia is October 18.

Lastly, I pilfered that last item, as predicted, from the latest jam-packed Green Jobs Philly newsletter, of which you can find a Web version here and subscribe to the e-mail version if you want to be kept up to date on local green trends.
