Energy Q&A with ECA

Q: I want to make some energy efficient changes to my house, but I'm afraid to begin because I have had bad experiences with the quality of work from contractors in the past. How do I find a reliable contractor?

A: You are absolutely correct that a good, qualified contractor is an important part of achieving a more energy efficient home. While the efficiency of the equipment installed is something to consider, it is equally important that the equipment is installed properly, sized correctly, and that ductwork is properly sealed so that 25% of the energy you are paying for doesn't leak out, like it does in the average American home. A good contractor will ask you questions about your usage and comfort, and discuss all your options with you. You can ask them about previous jobs they have done and get references for previous customers to confirm that their work is good. Additionally, there is a list of contractors at www.energywisepa.org who list their qualifications and have been checked by the site's moderator.

When you make the investment to increase the efficiency of your home you want to be sure that it pays off. Please choose your contractor carefully—it does make a difference! Also, keep in mind these three steps to ensure good results: 1) get an energy audit from a BPI certified auditor; 2) do the work suggested; 3) make sure the auditor returns to "test out" the house to verify energy savings. This is a good way to insure the quality of the work.
