Flyers' Richards could see limited minutes

POSTED: Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 2:14 PM

All of Canada has been waiting for tonight’s puck drop since July 2, 2003 – the date the IOC awarded Vancouver’s bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Flyers forward Mike Richards might have to keep waiting.

Both NHL.com and the NHL Live radio program have reported this afternoon that Richards will be one of Canada’s healthy scratches for tonight’s game against Norway (7:30, CNBC).Richards skated as Canada’s 13th forward in practice on Tuesday night.

However, in international play, teams can dress 13 forwards and seven defensemen. That likely will mean Richards will see limited minutes and split time with Drew Doughty. In Game 1, Team USA is splitting the 12th and 13th forward duties between Ryan Callahan and Chris Drury.

Here were Canada’s lines:

Nash-Crosby-Bergeron
Staal-Getzlaf-Perry
Marleau-Thornton-Heatley
Morrow-Toews-Iginla

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will likely start on Canada’s first pairing with Dan Boyle.

Roberto Luongo is expected to start in net, with Martin Brodeur getting the nod Thursday.

Also, TSN’s Darren Dreger tweeted today that Flyers forward Jeff Carter – who was flown to Vancouver as a possible alternate for Ryan Getzlaf – did not fly home yesterday as reported. Carter will apparently stick around in Vancouver to watch tonight’s game against Norway – he just didn’t expect to be seated next to Richards.

Looks like you're all about as informed as Sam D. Personally I enjoyed Richie's SHORTHANDED GOAL.

Richards played a regular shift and he was also on the PK and PP. As the 13th forward the intent is to sub him with Toews on the fourth line but Richards ended up playing a bit on all four lines last night.

This is simply wrong...you get to dress 20 skaters. There are only 20 skaters on the Canadian Team. None of the skaters will be scratched. Check the rules. They are different than the NHL. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=517746

I hope he's scratched for the whole tournament - I want our guys rested and ready to go after the Olympics but more than that with their own Olympic fire burning in their belly - Maybe Mike and Jeff will realize they have something to prove and that you have to go out and earn respect.

Word on the street was that Richie was picked largely for his penalty killing. Interesting to see who they put in those rolls out of that starting lineup.

It must suck to make the team and not play. I believe Richards is better than Morrow though. Its tough to win a spot with the talent they have and if you look at those centers there is no way Richards will uproot any of them. He will have to play wing and most likely have to replace either Morrow or Bergeron.

PhillyGuy18, only 1 person (some guy named Alexander Ovechkin) scored more goals than Carter last year. I wouldn't call that one of the most overrated players in the NHL. Patience is a virtue, and the Flyers would have regretted trading him this season. I'm glad cooler heads prevailed. The team as a whole has underachieved, but I'm glad they held on to the #2 goal scorer in the league last year. And he has been playing much better lately. It's crazy how strongly people react to slumps in this town. Relax!

I'm glad Ryan is better...Jeff didn't deserve to be an Olympian. He is quite possibly one of the NHL's most overrated players

He has received state and national awards at each stop and since joining the Daily News in 1992 has been honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors, the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania and the Keystone Awards. He and his wife have raised three fine children, none of whom are even the least bit impressed with the above. Sam is veteran of Olympics coverage for the Daily News, including the Games in Sydney and Turin, among others.

MARCUS HAYES grew up on a small farm outside of Hermon, NY., a small town near the Canadian border about the size of Reading Terminal Market. In high school he played three varsity sports and aspired to be faster, or more skilled, or taller. Having failed in those aspirations and seeking a warmer climate, Marcus attended Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and eventually graduated with a degree in Magazine Writing. He also earned a degree in English from the College of Arts and Sciences. To date he has written for no magazines. His English is spotty at best. Upon graduation in 1990, with Jim Boeheim's talent-leaden SU basketball teams having won no titles, Marcus spent 4½ years working for the now-absorbed Syracuse Herald-Journal covering high school sports, local small college sports and non-revenue sports at SU. Marcus joined the Daily News as a feature story writer in 1995. Among other assignments he has covered the Eagles and Phillies beats for most of his tenure. Still, the paper soldiers on.
