'Virgin' Globes winner recalls heeled sprint

Golden Globes winner Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin") learns that mermaid skirts aren't meant for running.

From the Television Critics Association's winter meetings in Pasadena, Calif:

Gina Rodriguez was still on a winner's high Tuesday when a bunch of reporters showed up on the Manhattan Beach, Calif., set of the CW's "Jane the Virgin."

If you watched Sunday's Golden Globes (and even if you haven't yet started watching the terrifically entertaining "Jane," in which Rodriguez plays an accidentally inseminated 23-year-old virgin), you may recall the camera's following her, every excruciating step of the way, as she made her way to the stage, where she delivered an emotional acceptance speech.

Here's how it felt from her end:

"It was forever...You get so scared, because people tell you, 'Just so you know, you should get up there as fast as possible."

Her attitude, though, was, "Let's just make it to that table [in the Beverly Hilton ballroom] and enjoy the show. And so when they called my name, all I could think about was like, 'Oh my God, I have 55 seconds [to get up there and thank everyone] so I need to run. But then Oprah was like, 'Hey, Gina!' and I was like, 'Oh my God, that's Oprah!' [losing] about 10 seconds off my time. And the mermaid skirt was so difficult to climb stairs with, so when I got to those stairs I was like, 'OK, here's where all the time is being spent.' Then I ran.

"But it was awesome. Because the second I got up there, I just spoke from my heart."

When I asked Rodriguez if she thought women -- who usually have to deal with  heels and gowns -- might be granted an extra 10 seconds overall, she didn't need 10 seconds to think about it.

"That would be awesome. I would sign that petition. I mean, I've already gotten my award. I don't expect anything more. But if I was to get another in the future, God willing, if that should so happen, I would love that 10 extra seconds."
