The pilot for Fox's much-buzzed-about J.J. Abrams' drama "Fringe" was screened for critics here late Sunday night -- though it leaked on the Web weeks ago, the network still wouldn't send it out in the usual way -- and while I imagine I'll have plenty to say about it in the coming months, right now, I'm struck by the cow, which stole at least one scene..

Yes, there's a cow, and apparently she's going to be a regular, "Fringe" producers say (along with "Dawson's Creek's" Joshua Jackson, John Noble and Anna Torv).

But since the pilot was shot in Toronto and the show's going to be filmed in New York (which, thanks to some changes in its tax laws, appears to be the new Canada), they've had to recast the cow, which wasn't permitted to travel for work.

Mad-cow worries? Screen Actors Guild rules? Haven't a clue.

Executive producer Jeff Pinkner, who directed the pilot, said that "literally, there have been conversations about making up the [new] cow" in case viewers notice that her spots don't match those of the original.

About Ellen Gray
As the TV critic for the Philadelphia Daily News, I've always believed my job is less about thumbs -- up or down -- and more about the conversation. Because the more choices we have, the fewer people in our lives know what we're talking about when we say, "Did you see that?" And that's when television really starts to get interesting. So let's talk. From Jan. 5-16, I'm in Pasadena, Calif., for the Television Critics Association's winter meetings. Check here for updates or you can follow me on Twitter: @elgray Want to meet the readers who won this fall's Everybody's a Critic contest? They'll be weighing in from time to time all season.
