'The Closer' chalks up one last win for TNT

Kyra Sedgwick left TNT with a parting gift Monday: A bumper crop of viewers for the finale of "The Closer," which attracted an average of nearly 9.1 million viewers.
Not only did that make it the summer's No. 1 series telecast this summer, but some 7.2 million of those viewers apparently stuck round for a second hour to see Mary McDonnell's Capt. Sharon Raydor take over for Brenda Leigh Johnson (Sedgwick) as head of "Major Crimes."

Kyra Sedgwick left TNT with a parting gift Monday: A bumper crop of viewers for the finale of “The Closer,” which attracted an average of nearly 9.1 million viewers.

Not only did that make it the summer’s No. 1 series telecast this summer, but some 7.2 million of those viewers apparently stuck round for a second hour to see Mary McDonnell’s Capt. Sharon Raydor take over for  Brenda Leigh Johnson (Sedgwick) as head of “Major Crimes.”

Those are the best premiere numbers for any cable series this year, putting “Major Crimes” ahead of the also high-rated premieres of “Dallas” (6.9 million) and “Perception” (5.6 million), according to TNT.

It also has to make NBC wonder about the promotional power of the Olympics, where the ad for its newest “reality” series, “Stars Earn Stripes,” weren’t enough to boost average viewership for its two-hour premiere Monday much beyond 5.1 million.

About this blog
As the TV critic for the Philadelphia Daily News, I've always believed my job is less about thumbs -- up or down -- and more about the conversation. Because the more choices we have, the fewer people in our lives know what we're talking about when we say, "Did you see that?" And that's when television really starts to get interesting.
