TNT cancels 'Men of a Certain Age'

Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman will not be happy. And neither will fans of TNT’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy “Men of a Certain Age,” which the network has canceled after two seasons. These are just the sorts of things that tend to be announced on a Friday afternoon in mid-July. Jennifer Lopez splits from her hubby, a show that critics love gets taken out with the trash.

After a week in which TNT had made a big deal about renewing its new Steven Spielberg series "Falling Skies" for a second season and greenlighted an updated version of "Dallas," plenty of us were nervous for Ray Romano's gentle and offbeat show about three buddies (played by Romano, Andre Brauger and Scott Bakula) confronting middle age because in our hearts — and in our reading of the Nielsens — we knew the ratings weren't nearly as good as the reviews.

"TNT has been proud to be a part of 'Men of a Certain Age' for two seasons," said the network in a statement quoted by the Hollywood Reporter and several other outlets. "While the show has featured great storytelling and impeccable performances, the audience simply hasn't built to the point where we can continue the series. This was an extremely difficult decision for us. We wish Ray Romano, [his co-creator] Mike Royce and the terrific cast and crew of 'Men of a Certain Age' the very best and look forward to exploring new programming possibilities in the future."

Braugher, by the way, was nominated yesterday for an Emmy for his work on the show.
