Philly Mag's controversial "Being White in Philly" was supposed to get us talking about race. Mission accomplished.

UPDATE: Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists has announced that Philadelphia Magazine Editor Tom McGrath will discuss the March cover story, "Being White in Philly." with its members at 7 p.m. March 19 at the new headquarters of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, 801 Market St. Also on the agenda: the magazine's hiring practices.
The supposed purpose of that controversial Philadelphia Magazine cover story called, "Being White in Philly," was to get us talking about race. Judging from the comments yesterday on this blog and all the newspaper columns, TV news segments, and talk radio chatter, the article by Robert Huber more than achieved its goal.
Philadelphians are talking about black-white relations and, hopefully, in constructive ways that will pay off at some point. On Monday, Philly Mag will keep the conversation going by hosting a summit on race. The event is scheduled for March 18 at the National Constitution Center, according to Tom McGrath, editor of Philly mag. Stay tuned. More details to come.
so you're not calling his article bad journalism anymore? nice to see you wise up!! PhillyExcitement- I am sure the Liberals will try and protest and drown out any sense of civility at this event.
After all, being a perpetual victim is much easier than actually building something. Professor1982
Kudos. It is a rally tough, touchy conversation, even with rational and decent people. I am in a Masters of Social Work program with very progressive people and we have had discussions on race that are more than respectful but very intense and at times difficult. Dialogue is so crucial, though. jimphilly5

We should stop buying Philly Mag, and we should begin boycotting its advertisers. Sam Pillegi- Ok there Adolf.
Professor1982 - Where do you work? Hopefully you loose you job, I don't agree with your opinion.

Just what we need, another monologue on race where everyone agrees we're on the right path, (we just need more money), when anyone with half a brain knows we arent. A charade. tr88
The Constitution Center seems to be an ironic place to have a forum where a journalist is being smeared for daring to print free speech. Is there any truth to the rumor that Bob Huber, Juan Williams and Bill Cosby will be on hand to watch the proceedings from their cages? I can assure yo of one thing, no airing of "dirty laundry" will be allowed. It is verboten. tr88
Dr. Cosby should be invited to give his "Ghettosburg Address" that he gave on the 50th anniversary of Brown v the Topeka Board of education.Dr. Cosby was of course smeared by the same people who will be there next week.----Ladies and gentlemen, these people set, they opened the doors, they gave us the right, and today, ladies and gentlemen, in our cities and public schools we have fifty percent drop out. In our own neighborhood, we have men in prison. No longer is a person embarrassed because they're pregnant without a husband. (clapping) No longer is a boy considered an embarrassment if he tries to run away from being the father of the unmarried child (clapping)
.
Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic and lower middle economic people are [not*] holding their end in this deal. In the neighborhood that most of us grew up in, parenting is not going on. (clapping) In the old days, you couldn't hooky school because every drawn shade was an eye (laughing). And before your mother got off the bus and to the house, she knew exactly where you had gone, who had gone into the house, and where you got on whatever you had one and where you got it from. Parents don't know that today.
I'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was two? (clapping) Where were you when he was twelve? (clapping) Where were you when he was eighteen, and how come you don't know he had a pistol? (clapping) And where is his father, and why don't you know where he is? And why doesn't the father show up to talk to this boy? tr88- I'll say something politically incorrect about race. apparently there were riots in Brooklyn last night over a police shooting and what i have to say is I don't think you have the right to complain when your neighborhoods are war zones. cops don't want anything to do with your neighborhood. nobody does. you know you don't want to go into your own neighborhoods. you can't walk out the door at night without the potential of catching a stray bullet.
we got to check what is going on with these boys that they are wiling to kill just to feel a little bit of control. i think it's all about fashion.
can't wait for the day when meek mill can't sell an album.

Name any other race that has enjoyed so much protection from the Govt and Legal Community....
I'll wait... Professor1982 - You mean other than white people for the first 180 years of this country's existence?
