Shame on Paula Deen

POSTED: Wednesday, January 18, 2012, 2:02 PM
FILE - In this April 7, 2010 file photo, celebrity chef and Food Network star Paula Deen poses for a portrait in New York. Deen is teaming with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch a program that aims to help people live with Type 2 diabetes and promote a Novo diabetes drug. Whenever I used to think of TV chef Paula Deen, the word excessive would come to my mind. That’s been replaced now with another term - hypocrite. Deen knew darn well about her Type 2 diabetes, a disease complicated by the excessively rich food she’s known for, but didn’t say a word about it until after she had a deal with a drug company to hawk its anti-diabetes product. That’s low.  Nobody should be telling anyone to deep fry cheesecake or lasagna. I don’t care what that stuff tastes like. You’re supposed to eat to nourish your body, not so you have a food orgasm. A friend says I'm being too harsh. But I think Deen deserves every bit of backlash she’s getting, do you?

I was thinking what I would do in that predicament. I think it's reasonable to say that she developed the chef's bad habit of tasting everything she made ... but that she was demoing recipes that are for "special occasions" or once in while --- not for every day. Of course, she didn't every SAY that... so I guess you're right that she could be accused of hawking an unhealthy lifestyle.

Paula Deen has never said that her way of cooking was a lifestyle that we would embrace daily but demonstrates southern cooking as handed down to her. I have heard her say on more than once, moderation. Paula does not force us to cook unhealthy, we make those choices and can indulge on occassion. Genetics plays a role in this as well. I will continue to watch Paula, but still make sensible choices, something we all control.

When did cooking become a lifestyle? Really reaching for subject matter today, aren't you?

she's a hypocrite and the Food Network should be ashamed to keep her on TV. Her show should be forced to state that she's getting paid by a diabetes medicine company and that her recipes are dangerous to your health. What if Rachael Ray was getting paid by an olive oil company and consistently promoted EVOO in each recipe - at least you'd like to know about it. Anthony Bourdain had it right, Deen's a dangerous woman and should be reprimanded, not rewarded.

Paula Dean, just like the rest of us, is under no obligation to reveal private details of her medical history to the rest of the world. The connection between diabetes, obesity and diet is well known and has been well publicized. Anything (with the exception of tobacco and hard narcotics) in moderation will not harm an otherwise healthy individual. All Ms. Dean is guilty of is showing us how to prepare meals that are usually delicious and simple to make. People need to be aware of what they put into their bodies and take responsibility for the choices they make.

You are 100% correct. She is under no obligation to disclose any part of her private life.

Yes ! Typical of the Big Pharma to do this, and a celebrity to use anything possible for a buck. The sad part is, the majority of diabetes cases can be treated through proper diet, without using drugs.

I confess to not watching her show, but my wife likes it. In a world where Kim Kardashian makes millions doing nothing, and where overweight former celebrities resort to dieting every other year for their income, and where politicians elected to serve tend to serve their own interests most of the time, how much can we fault a TV chef for trying to make a few extra bucks? It's a bit hypocritical, but it seems to be "The American Way" nowadays.

Paula Deen-- just another person looking to make as much $$ as humanly possible with the delusion she/he can take it with them when they go

Of all the comments, I most agree with dblankj. Paula Dean is trying to make as much money as she can, even if it's at the American public's expense. Shame shame on her. I'm glad I'm not that anxious to make money.
