Winston Justice traded to Colts

POSTED: Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 11:56 AM

The Eagles have traded right tackle Winston Justice along with a sixth-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for a sixth-round pick.

The deal is the first for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman with new Colts GM Ryan Grigson, who formerly worked for Roseman in the Eagles' front office.

The move pushes the Eagles from the 17th pick in Round 6 to the second pick in the round.

More importantly, it saves the Eagles about $2.3 million in salary cap space this year.

Justice's departure seemed likely since last offseason when he was coming off knee surgery, and lost his starting job to Todd Herremans, who signed a long-term extension yesterday with the team.

Also, defensive tackle Antonio Dixon has signed his second-round tender for $1.927 million.

Other teams can attempt to sign him, but the Eagles would have seven days after April 20 to match offer or receive a second-round pick as compensation for losing him. And that isn't happening.

I hope they re-sign King Dunlap. He can play solidly at both tackle positions. He can also play guard. That makes him a valuable player as a backup. At least they got something for Justice rather than just releasing him.

Dude...are you serious? King Dunlap couldn't block Stephen Hawking. With his size he should be annihilating people, but he constantly gets abused by much smaller players because he is too slow and too soft. He is pretty damned useless. I can only hope one of our draft picks will supplant him sooner rather than later. Good deal moving Justice. Making way too much not to start, and he isn't good enough to start. I'm surprised the Colts had any interest.

Oh my god, did you really say that? Couldn't block Stephen Hawking...

Now that's funny. And one of the funniest things I have read among these posts in a long time.

And I agree, I'll drive Dunlap to the airport if you can get rid of him!

Before some PC wacko gets on here and chastises shatter for making joke of the physically disabled...let me say that even Stephen Hawking would've laughed at that one.

I thought Justice played decently in 2010 until he hurt his knee. He did struggle sometimes against 3-4 OLB rushers. He seemed like a good guy, best of luck. Disappointed the Eagles could only get 15 spots in the 6th round for him. They couldn't even get the 6th round pick outright for him? All that money will go towards Mccoy's new contract.

Sorry man, you're mistaken. If you're tendered, you don't have to sign. Signing it takes you off the market. You can't be signed to two offers from two different teams (and that's what is being tendered, an "offer"). If he didn't sign, he can get offers elsewhere, if he did sign, he can't. Odds are, he priced out the market, realized the tender was the best offer he'd get and signed it.

Show me the rule that says otherwise.

Yeah, seems like this guy is confusing a RFA tender with the Franchise tender.

might wantto brush up on those RFA rules, or NFL rules in general. Once a player signs his tender, he can't accept an offer from another team.

You may want to brush up on rules for signing a Tender. Other teams are allowed to offer a contract to those who sign the tender and then the original team has the option to match that offer or allow the playter to go to that team and in return they receive that teams 2nd round pick. beofre you spout at the mouth, make sure you're the one who is informed.

The accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid already have a few fastballs lined up to take Justice's place. The selected candidate will also be able to fix a leaky pipe or install a new hard drive as the Linc also needs a plumber or computer repairman and this front office loves guys who can multitask!

Saving Money = Priority One. Good job by Howie, Banner's right hand man and Valet! I can't believe Andy allowed a 2nd round bust of his to be traded. Hopefully Laws is next, or is it too soon?

Nice Guy...good luck in your new home....but not a big loss....BUT the REAL STORY is HR, fabled NFL guru and Ace draft selector conning a former co-worker into a trade....he did it all with 6ht rounders, his favorite playground and he endeared himself to his meal ticket Joe Banner by saving money.....Now that is wheeling and dealing HR...Your experience in the mail room is finally paying off

Winston was a pretty good guest columnist. I enjoyed reading his stuff. As a right tackle? So so. Remember how excited everyone was on draft day when we got Justice and Bunkley in the draft - considered the number one d-tackle and top two o-line prospect?

Do these guys proofread their work before they post it? I don't send a freaking email out without reading thru it once. The mistakes I see these "professional writers" make is ridiculous. How does one apply to be an Eagles beat writer? Do you just walk in somewhere and ask for an application? Pathetic.

I agree. That's why the Eagles depend so much on free-agents, players developed by OTHER teams' coaching staffs. Up until this point, the Eagles coaching staff has been miserable at developing (coaching/teaching) players and cultivating their natural athleticism into full productivity. I'm hoping with the addition of Todd Bowles,Secondary Coach; Howard Mudd, Offensive Line Coach; Jim Washburn, Defensive Line Coach; as well as Keith Gray, Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach there will be a significant improvement given a full season in which to prepare.

Since Detroit gave a boatload of money to Johnson and lost a corner to Tampa, does that mean Eagles do a sign and trade deal with Detroit for Tulloch with Ashante? I doubt that Detroit can afford to give Tulloch the kind of money he wants after Johnson's new contract and they need a corner. Interesting stuff. Redskins improved, Bears improved, Tampa improved, San Fran made some moves... NFC is gonna be even tougher. Peyton, go somewhere in the AFC except for AFC North, if you sign with a NFC team or AFC North team you won't make it through the season lol.

wow I would have hoped and expected for at least a 4th straight up but to just swap picks in the same round seems like we didn't get much value at all for a former 1st rounder (or was he a 2nd?). They better at least get a 2nd rounder for Asante!!!

This team has to pay the top players so the scrubs get traded. A second rd pick is now going for a 6th rd. Another fabulous Eagle draftee! Nice going Howie. You deserve a nice lollipop for that good deed.

That had to be an interesting negotiation.

Eagles we will trade Justice and our 6th for your 5th round pick,
Colts-no deal - how about Justice and a 6th rounders for our 7th rounder.
Eagles- lets compromise, your 6th round pick for Justice and our 6th round pick.
    Colts- we

Did you guys read the whole article or just the headline? Eagles made the trade to get rid of Justice's cap money which freed up a few million dollars and plus they pick 2nd in the 6th round. Not bad, now will they use that extra cap money to sign Jackson to a long term deal, maybe extend McCoy or Maclin or use the money to get Tulloch, maybe they are looking at a back up RB, LT is available. No not talking about Laurence Taylor. Who knows what the Birds are thinking. They might be looking at a bit more cap space if they get a trade partner for Ashante. This just came to me... with the 2nd pick in the 6th round the Birds can get a return man. Those late round picks are good for special teams needs.
