What concerns you about the Eagles?

POSTED: Friday, August 7, 2009, 8:32 AM

What is your biggest concern about the Eagles thus far?
Replacing Stewart Bradley at middle linebacker
Sean McDermott's adjustment to defensive coordinator
Shawn Andrews' injury problems
Brian Westbrook's recovery from surgery
Jeremy Maclin having to catch up after his holdout

It has been an eventful two weeks at Lehigh for the Eagles as they take the day away from the practice field to honor defensive coordinator Jim Johnson with a memorial service at Lincoln Financial Field.

Evey day has seemingly brought another issue for the team to deal with, to Sean McDermott's promotion the day before camp began, to Johnson's unfortunate passing, to Jeremy Maclin's holdout, to three players getting injured in the fitness run, to Stewart Bradley's season-ending knee injury, to Juqua Parker's arrest.

We thought this morning would be a good day to take stock of what concerns you the most, among the issues. Yes, we know it's early. Yes, the regular season opener is still more than a month away. Yes, the Eagles have yet to play a preseason game, with the opener next Thursday night against the Patriots. Yes, a lot can and surely wil happen between now and when it counts for real. Still, there is always something to talk about with the Eagles.

Here are some injury updates from yesterday at Lehigh:

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs (stinger) returned to practice, as did tight end Cornelius Ingram (knee swelling) . . . Right guard Stacy Andrews took a "maintenance day" for his surgically repaired knee . . . For the second day in a row, right tackle Shawn Andrews (back) was seen briskly walking on a treadmill . . . Also sidelined are defensive end Victor Abiamiri (chest), left tackle Jason Peters (quadriceps), running back Brian Westbrook (ankle), tight end Matt Schobel (calf) .

Meanwhile, up in Albany, the Giants practice in pads for the first time. And that meant a return to hitting for defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. He conceded the knee gets stiff sometimes, but said he is doing well.

“It felt good,” Umenyiora said. “I felt like myself, which is more important than anything. But I felt good. I felt like I did okay.

“It was a lot of fun. I haven’t experienced that in close to a year. It felt good. I didn’t feel rusty. I’ve been playing for so long, it’s cliché – it’s like riding a bike. I got right back on.”

Aside from the day to day repetitions, Umenyiora’s next big test will come in the preseason opener on Aug. 17 vs. Carolina.

“Real life,” he called playing in a game. “These aren’t real bullets yet, these are BB guns.”

Joe "decleater" Mays will do a job at Mike...but offensively Westbrook and the "big kid" need to get back to form for the Birds not to struggle during the first half of the season...Don will have to be close to perfect while this team jells for the Team to compete early on...kinda nauseating to think we missed getting Burgess because we wouldn't give them a 3rd and a 5th pick for him...what was Banner thinking?....Reed's really being tested this year, with all the drama...he will show everyone something if he can right this "listing ship" and sail into the playoffs...go Birds.

There is one glaring problem so far and that's is without a doubt the "O" Line. It takes a good season for any 5 guys to jell as a unit when it comes to an offensive line playing together for the first time. I was happy this off-season with the way they rebuilt it and was going to give them the benefit of the doubt for the first few games while they got used to one another, but that was based on them going through training camp and getting some reps during the pre-season. Well we're half way through camp and they haven't taken one snap as a complete unit, this is truely a big worry for me, hate to be a pessimist this early but it's been bred into me over the years. At least Shawn says he's in a "happy place", there is that to be thankful for!!! phewwwww

To me, Shawn Andrews is the biggest worry! There are just too many questions/issues with him: His contract? His mental health? His back injury? Maybe all of the above. He has to prove himself all over again to Eagles phans!

The whole O situation is unsettling. Two veterans backed up by a lot of kids. The O line would have taken 5-7 games to gel under the best of circumstances, we haven't seen the best of circumstances. If McNabb can hold onto the benching anger and both McNabb and Westbrook can stay healthy there is cause for hope, not optimism, but hope.

5 are you serius? McCoy is playing 2nd fiddle to Westbrook until he can't play anymore. I think Shady can play and I hope AR isn't too proud to let a rookie contribute two years in a row, but right now this is #36's team.

DJ you hit it right on the head. The O-Line has to start working together or the first half of the season is going to be VERY rough. Haven't heard a word about King Dunlap, I guess he was a flash in the pan last year. Nothing is ever easy for an Eagles fan.

This defense will not even be close to the last yr - you do not lose Jim Johnson and Dawk - and not see a huge difference - and then, lose the best player on the existing D in Bradley. Very worried about the defense - especially in tenacity and ruggedness.
