Manningham ruled out against Eagles

UPDATED: The Giants have downgrades wide receiver Mario Manningham to out and he did not make the trip with the team to Philly.

Manningham suffered a concussion Monday night against the Rams and had been listed as doutbful. He did not practice all week.

The Giants already are without wide receiver Domenik Hixon, who tore his ACL for the second time in 15 months.

It looks like Victor Cruz will start with Hakeem Nicks as the Giants receivers.

EARLIER:

Here are the five things we will be watching when the Eagles host the Giants on Sunday:

Air Assault. One of the Eagles’ greatest strengths is their receiving corps and one of the Giants’ biggest weaknesses is their pass defense. Both Sam Bradford and Rex Grossman torched the Giants for 300-plus yards. The weakest link is cornerback Aaron Ross, an injury-prone former first-rounder who hasn’t lived up to expectations. Regardless of who starts at quarterback Sunday, he’ll almost certainly go after Ross.

Dealing With the Giants’ Run Game. The Eagles have given up 292 rushing yards in their first two games. That coupled with a depleted Giants receiving corps means the Birds are going to get a heavy dose of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, at least early. Eagles have allowed 6.6 yards per carry on first down and already have been torched for 10 double-digit runs in two games, including that momentum-swinging 61-yarder in the fourth quarter last week by the Falcons’ Michael Turner.

Eliminating turnovers. The Eagles turned the ball over three times Sunday – twice on Mike Vick fumbles and once on a Vick interception. The Falcons scored 14 points off of those turnovers. One of them also killed an Eagles’ scoring opportunity. Take away those giveaways and the Eagles would’ve won in a walk. Giants forced two turnovers in last week’s win over the Rams.

Protecting Mr. X. The Eagles’ offensive line played better in Week 2 than it did in Week 1 and needs to continue that improvement this week regardless of who lines up behind center. They won’t have to deal with dome noise, but they will have to deal with a formidable Giants pass rush that is expected to get Osi Umenyiora back this week. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewwell also frequently likes to bring his corners and safeties off the edge.

Red Zone Redux? Last year, the Eagles’ defense had the worst red-zone percentage in the league in the last quarter century. Allowed touchdowns on an astounding 76.7 percent of their opponents’ trips inside the 20. With all of the offseason additions on defense, it was supposed to be better this year. Then, last week, the Falcons went 5-for-5 in the red zone against the Eagles. – Paul Domowitch

The change in linebackers should improve the red zone defense. Yeah right.

The Giants are on the verge of insurrectioon. Coughlin is history. Injuries abound. An ideal situation for the Eagles.

speak for yourself Timo, DooDooFresh's comments often make me lol. I fully support DooDooFresh/Aristotle. and as for the article, the caption says the Giants "might rely" on Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw to "wear down the eagles" as if it is some kind of myth. THATS EXACTLY WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN. the 265 POUND BRANDON JACOBS is going to DESTROY that exxcuse for a linebacking core as they all would need to run around with four 10 pound wieghts tied to thier necks or thier shoulder pads during the game just to be CLOSE to being as heavy as jacobs. without that futuristic invention that Andy is relying on those 265 pounds are going to BULLDOZE that defense in the 4th quarter. call all the trick plays you want Andy, that will stop it for sure. brilliant.

I'm not over confident for this game. Giants run the ball and Eagles don't stop them last team with the ball wins.

After giving up 5 red zone scores, Juan Castillo OWES the fans a shut-out of the Giants. Time to show what all the FA activity netted the Eagles: create some turn-overs, take-away and score some points defense! Like to see that part of the roster GEL and stonewall sEli and the Gnats. Giants=0 Eagles 42. MERCY.

Weird, that so many sports analysts are looking at who is injured, which team is best at receiver, and all that. The Giants have zero desire to lose yet another game to the Birds. This is a rivalry game -- throw out all of the analysis. New York will pound Philly's obvious weaknesses, and it really will take a miracle for Andy Reid's men to win this one.

    armchair,
you mean it...it'll be a good game, like a rivalry game usually is, not some electronic game, fantasy follies, little kids imaging their pros in a backyard game? Grown men hating each other for 3 hours trying to gain territory? A mini Middle East. If you run analysis to the nth degree it comes up - anything can happen. Miracle, schmerical...good football, make plays, you'll win...sometimes in the last ounce of time. And sometimes you lose...sometimes in the last seconds. That's what makes it a rivalry.

The Giants weaknesses line up favorably with the Eagles strengths. Their secondary is blown up. The Eagles' receivers are top notch. The Giants pass rush is, um, weakened. This will allow Vick the freedom to succeed. The Giants decimated receiver corps will be a huge disadvantage in trying to come from behind (not to mention that Manning is a born Pigfu**er). The Giants can't win this week without a miracle.

We are in for another brawl. The Eagles should be way too explosive for the Giants to handle. I expect a high scoring game with a lot of injuries. Eagles 31 Giants 28.

We have the highest paid secondary minus the safeties 3 outstanding corners 2 are in the top 5 cromartie top 10 even the most average of defensive cordinators would put asamougha on the teams best TE second of all the giants have no recieving core as of right now they are going to get off the bus running the ball bring kurt coleman in the box can we plz next season get someone who can make in game adjustments and we will when this game very easily if we give mccoy 19 rushes a game you have good backs use them and the falcons game was an debacle because your offensive play calling at the very least everyone in the league knows what your going to call a pass play why run with vick when u have 3 capable running backs and as usual we get to the goaline and you throw 3 damn passes ronnie is brown 230 pds use him stop trying to be so damn cute. frustartaed even all the way in afghanistan
