Reid on Westbrook's concussion

POSTED: Sunday, November 15, 2009, 7:39 PM

Brian Westbrook ended the 31-23 loss to San Diego on the sideline with another concussion.

Westbrook had missed the last two games after suffering a concussion against Washington. Against the Chargers, he had six carries for 28 yards and caught two passes for 26 yards. His last carry came on the opening drive of the second half.

Coach Andy Reid said Westbrook "took a heck of a hit," leading to the concussion.

“We’ll just see how Brian does here," he said. "That’s a concern of everybody, us included and Brian.”

As for Westbrook's status, Reid said, "It’s too soon ... We’ll make sure we evaluate it, and take every step that we can to make sure that he’s OK. We did that the last time. We’re going to keep doing it ... I feel bad for Brian, something our docs are going to look at it and be on top of as soon as we get back."

He later said, "We’re going to do everything the right way, and take every precautionary measure to make sure Brian’s OK. In these types of situations, football is secondary. You have to look out for this kid for his future and make sure he is OK before he gets back out there.”

*

As for the game, Reid best summed up the game this way: “We just came up stinking short.”

Other thoughts from Reid: “You can’t get in the red zone three times early and not be able to punch it in. That hurt us in the end. We had three opportunities early to do that.”

On the play selection: "We thought the things that we called were going to be effective. They worked in the second part, not in the first part. We did what we thought was best and came up short three times.”

On the Eagles cutting the lead and then seeing the Chargers score again: “We had the momentum swing in our direction and then we weren’t able to get off the field.”

On the comeback falling short: "We’re in a position to win the game when we were down by that much, that kind of rips your heart out. At the same time, the guys battled and put us back in the position to win that football game.”

“Our heart is broken, but they also have something they can take from this. There is some good things they can take out of it and some things these guys can learn from it. We will do that and then get better from it."

Blessings on Brian. But, no more please. As to the game, no blame on McNabb, some on Andy with the No Time outs again, but the blame is not only on the 3 red zone failures but a really banged up D which allowed Rivers and LT to storm all over the field and the Chargers' defense was better than expected. Well, Dallas lost so the East stumbles and bumbles to the End.

Andy, Your crAPPY PLAY CALLING IS WHY WE LOST TODAY, AND YOUR LACK OF TRUST IN THE RUNNING GAME. COME ON ANDY FIRST AND GOAL AT THE ONE AND YOU SETTLE FOR A FIELD GOAL. PATHETIC!!!

This is a disgrace.. Where is MR. Humanitarian jeff lurie at? Allowing his players to play three weeks after a concussion and 8 days after showing symptoms...

will you folks PLEASE stop whining? They are still in first place in the divison with a 2-1 record. They totally control their own destiny. They payed hearts out with multiple linebackers out, cornerbacks out and an O line that has never played as unit as planned, yet again FIRST PLACE! Congratulate these guys for giving their best!

Anytime you have to throw over 50 times and you can't even surpass the 30 yards gained mark rushing in one football game you have a losing team and you Eagle fans might as well get used to it. Reid is a loser, the team are losers, and you guys got no shot for anything. Draft a quarterback to replace McNabb who cannot win anything.

buttkisserof#5, Westbrook took a second concussion and couldn't finish? What did your boyfriend #5 do. Lots of yardage that came long after the outcome was decided. In the redzone three times and old #5 comes up empty.5isthealltimeloser.

Brian, thanks for all the great years. You are one of my alltime favorite Eagles, but it is probably time. Think of your future. Andy, you are partially right. You came stinking. Period. You need to leave and take your no heart POS wannbe QB with you. 5isthe....., you obviously haven't seen the best. They are playing each other right now and they make your boy 5 look like the towl boy.

Disappointment is what I read here, and I don't like the outcome at all, but when they were clicking they were really good. O-line protection was pretty good today, and as noted by all, more running never hurts us . . . Hope we re-group for next week in Chicago.

billgfc - what standings are you looking at. I see Dallas in 1st place with a cake schedule the rest of the way. The Eagles might have a better division record right now but after losing to the raiders how much faith can even a tool like you have? Amazing amount of misguided loyalty this team has. Wake up fool! The era is OVER, time to move on - new coach and QB.

McNabb and Reid aren't going anywhere this year so we should all be more analytical about the Eagles--like we were in the 1960s and 70s--appreciate the Eeeeags when they win but don't freak out when they lose. They're not 1/8 as bad as a Mike Boryla led team, or John Reeves for that matter ;-) Prayers out to 36. Everybody should do it, write it here, and help him heal for his own sake, not football.

Haterof#5, I don't know what game you were watching but our red zone offense was very predictable and easily covered. He overthrew weaver once but score on the next play. Andy comes up empty in the red zone not Donovan, All the top Qb's have more red zone interceptions than Don he just don't get the right calls.Mike l

Westbrook should have a conversation with Steve Young and Troy Aikman and follow them to behind the mic. I don't want to see him play again. Concussions become more frequent and serious the further you go.

Don't blame the team for playing Westbrook. This is pro football; if he has been cleared by the docs, he is going to play. The same thing happened in NCAA w/ Tim Tebow. The unfortunate thing is that he suffered another concussion. Now, he should be done for the regular season. Brian and the team made the best decision prior to the SD game. We should sign Larry Johnson, make him the short yardage back, use McCoy more. We have to run more. The season is not over, but we have to get back on track vs. Chi-Town. We need to use Desean better. Let him run the wildcat (like last year), give him reverses, end-arounds, and design ways to beat coverage and get him deep. We live and die by big plays.

You really have to feel bad for BWEST and maybe it's time to hangem up for a fantastic career. Now the coach needs to be fired there's no reason to have that type of gameplan and expect to win, jeff lurie needs to replace this guy. his thinking is so far off it's comical!
