Westbrook: Expectations on McNabb are too high

POSTED: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 8:17 PM

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook mentioned in an ESPN2 interview that he thinks Donovan McNabb deserves a new contract. (Click here for The Idle Rich's take on that issue.)

But the more interesting Westbrook comments about his quarterback might have come during an ESPN Radio segment with Colin Cowherd.

Westbrook said he thinks sometimes the expectations on McNabb are "just a little bit high" and he recognizes the questions fans sometimes have about McNabb's demeanor and the way he leads the Eagles.

“I think sometimes people want him to be someone else and he has just done a great job of leading this team," Westbrook said. "It’s not easy to win Super Bowls every year. It’s not easy to get to the playoffs every single year. Sometimes people’s expectations are just a little bit high.”

As for his view on his quarterback: “He’s been a leader and he’s been a great quarterback, a Pro Bowl quarterback. He’s been a great guy as well as a great player. To me, as a player, he’s lived up to all expectations that I could possibly have of him.”

Westbrook also was asked about the other issue that has emerged regarding the Eagles: Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson.

“I feel really strong about it because Chad has done so many good things in Cincinnati," Westbrook said. "It will be a great addition for us if we can add him.”

And we also know that was able to do. Adding Chad Johnson would make a superbowl contender. No offense to the eagles'current wideout but they are nowhere close to Chad Johnson talent. Case in point, Johnson would've caught that 4&10.

philly10- Yea, such a disaster that we went to the Super Bowl only to lose by 3 points to one of the greatest teams of all time. Chad Johnson proved last year that he can shut up and play even if he is not happy. The only question is whether McNabb is willing to share the spotlight.

Is it too much to ask to put a little "touch" on his passes. He doesn't need to throw a 98 MPH fastball at a guy's feet who is 10 yards away.

I'm not an Eagles fan, and I'm trying to be objective and not negative. I can say Chad Johnson is NOT the answer. He is easily rattled and doesn't play well against physical teams (see his work against the Steelers).

Incredible. Three years ago, this post would have gotten 100+ comments. Now - four. To the first poster, TO destroyed the team, huh? Or, we got to the Superbowl that year, and he was basically the MVP in that game on a half-broken leg. I'm not sold on Johnson as much as some - I think a young RB in the draft (Moreno) along with a stud lineman would do much more for the Eagles than getting Chad Johson. As much as I dislike the Eagles front office (especially Banner), the RB and OL positions are more of a need at this point than WR.

if the birds are serious in trying to get ocho=cinco, then pursue em.but not at the notion of giving the first rounders.we need to get younger guys who we can develop so get where we want to be.other hand, a top reciever like 85, woild def do no worse.

NO OchoStinko - GET BOLDIN & JASON PETERS - both are better then any draft picks we could get.

Chad Johnson would be a disaster. We would be much better suited with Braylon Edwards. Kevin Curtis doesent have it anymore, there is an interesting article at BirdsDaily.com that outlines his production trends

He's right. We do expect too much. If you make it to a NFC championship game 5 times, it would be wrong to expect him to try to get to the super bowl more than once. And after the year Westbrook had, he's right again. Anybody should get a contract after his performance after his deal.

Westbrook is content with being a high paid loser. With all DISREPECT: McNabb has been placed with world class defenses since he's been in the league. He's been blessed with a great running back BW , who, in his own right has been blessed with an Ofensive line. I love the Birds! I just don't believe the QB and RB do, as much as we all do. Bring Back a true Bird Dawk, Let the Bumbs fly!

I'm just hoping Campbell's gives Wilma a re-do on the soup commercial deal; Donovan's best years stat, health, and leadership-wise (including year getting to Super Bowl) have been when he spends more time w/ soup, and less time w/ carbs.
