Weaver: 'Felt Horrible' As It Looked

POSTED: Monday, September 13, 2010, 12:57 PM

Leonard Weaver swung past the NovaCare auditorium on crutches this afternoon, his left leg heavily braced. "It felt horrible, man, it felt awful," Weaver said the day after suffering what Eagles coach Andy Reid termed a "very severe" ACL tear on his only rushing attempt, against the Green Bay Packers. "I don't think I've ever felt anything like that."

"We'll see how things go from here," said Weaver, a Pro Bowl fullback last season. This season undoubtedly is over for him. From the tone of Reid's remarks, you have to wonder if there isn't a lot more in question. "We really don't know what's going on right now," Weaver said.

As Weaver spoke with reporters, Jason Davis and Owen Schmitt walked past him, on their way to the locker room. As Reid confirmed, the two free agent fullbacks will work out for the Eagles today. Davis has been with the Bears, Raiders and Jets since signing with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2006. Schmitt was a 2008 fifth-round pick of Seattle.

Weaver said he saw the replay of his injury this morning -- his leg bending backward as Packers linebacker Nick Barnett drove into him -- and "it looked pretty nasty, especially at the end part, where it kind of looked like it bent all the way back. All I remember thinking about is the pain, how awful it felt going down to the ground."

Weaver, I expect to see you on the NFL Network next year, not on the gridiron.

You never want to see a guy get hurt, but it is particularly sad when it's a guy like this. I hope he can play again.

i must admit, I'm really surprised that this type of injury doesn't happen more often, with the size, speed and strength of the players these days. There must be an angel up there looking out for football players...

Best player, position for position, on the team [only All-Pro]. Get well, Leonard.

One of my favorites - always a class act and hard worker on and off the field. Get well soon and heal strong. Hope to see you at the start of next year.

HUGE loss, espescially with this mediocre line. Vick needs to start, so he can run around and save his life. Kolb will get killed behind these blockers.

Man, what a tough break hopefully, it's not career ending. Get well soon, and best of luck Leonard.

All the best to one truly first class PERSON on our Iggles. I can't say I felt your pain Leonard, because that looked just awful to have to deal with. I'm hoping that it doesn't turn out to be as bad as we're all assuming right now, and that you'll have the necessary surgery, and be able to resume practice by the time OTA's roll around next yeat.

He's a likable, articulate guy. Hopefully, he'll take Hugh Douglas' job on the air.

He's 28 with a massive knee injury and a big body. You really wonder if he can come back all the way after a repair. Looks unlikely but I hope he can.

if he is able to play again that is a victory in its own right, i am not so sure that will be the case, it looked catastrophic

My favorite player on offense. Now his career is probably over. I feel sick. Hold me Dave Spadaro.

Leonard, if you're reading this, I really hope the best for you in your recovery. Sports comes second, even from a die hard Eagles fan like myself. You come across to people as a real good person and it comes natural to like someone as yourself. I can't see the Eagles replacing him with anyone that would be available, but we can all hope. It is these situations that can sometimes provide the opportunity for someone else to shine.

Horrible. I still have an issue with how Weaver was held as another player bended him backwards. Are these guys idiots?

Get well Leonard. A talented pro athlete, and an eloquent, forthcoming young man. We need more like you. I'll not soon forget the gasps and groans that, I presume, came from the fans watching the replay on the screens at the Linc. I hope you feel better as soon as possible.

i think what he means by "severe" is that it's completely torn rather than partially torn. anyway, welker completely tore his acl and was on the field 8 months later. brady tore his acl and pcl and is back out there. so, there is hope.

Ironic: Seattle cut Weaver to give the FB job to Schmitt, then Weaver signed with the Birds. Maybe Schmitt can replace him here, too

Best wishes Weave, just another example of bad things happening to good people. He can still serve as a leader that the team looks to desperately need after one game, get the surgery, start your rehab and push those young boys to grow up fast.

He actually seems like 1 of the good guys. A genuine person. Plus he is a pro bowl player so he will be missed. I was so happy that the Eagles resigned him. Buckhalter came back from multiple ACL tears. Weavers looked like a BAD injury but hopefully he comes back

There's no such thing as a "severe" ACL tear. When it's gone, it's gone, and has to be replaced. What probably happened is that Weaver did other damage to the knee, as well, so he may be looking at more extensive surgery and a longer and less certain recovery.

Hope Weaver bounces back. A hard-nose guy. We really could use more players like him. Best wishes in recovery.
