Virginia group to honor Vick as 'hero'

The Southeastern Virginia Arts Association will honor Eagles quarterback Michael Vick at its first Black-Tie Honors Gala next month in Norfolk, the Virignian-Pilot is reporting.
In a news release, the group said it plans to honor Vick, a Newport News native, because he "epitomized the meaning of 'hero' not only by his unparalleled accomplishments on the football field, but more importantly, by his relentless resilience in overcoming the obstacles he has faced... and becoming a true example of life success for all to emulate."
Attorney Carl C. La Mondue is also being honored at the March 26 event.

According to Dictionary.com, a hero is "a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities." While Vick does have amazing ability, I don't know where the courage, bravery and nobility are. I do believe that Vick has "served his time" by being incarcerated, but speaking to kids about the wrongs of killing dogs is not courage or bravery, if it is part of the agreement you have made to be reinstated. It is a means to his ultimate goal, play football and get paid. I don't think Vick should be persecuted anymore, however he should not be canonized either.— jimmydugan- Vick has rehabed himself but lets keep it real here. How on earth is he a "hero"? Thats an insult to all men and women who are actual heros. This guy put himself in that situation and worked his way out. Good for him. Then he presumes that others think Vick is a hero. Speaking for myself: Wrong and wrong. What the rest of that babble about the military and first responders means, I have no idea. - Who blames Newport News for being proud of one of their own?? This city saw Michael Vick grow up, play high school ball, then college, and they witnessed the rise and fall of Mike in the NFL. Of course they are proud, elated for how he has turned his life around. They should celebrate it.— sherberg

- Ok, this is getting ridiculous. And the actual Southeastern Virginia Art Group is an African-American organization -funny how that was not mentioned by the journalists. I for one thinks people that said Vick should die or be in jail are ridiculous. He did his time, there is a market for his abilities, let the man live. HOWEVER, to honor him as a hero is equally ridiculous. There are police, firefighters, military who do not get such honors. It is quite ridiculous that it is always the black community or black people endorsing these type of things i.e. the assistant mayor in Dallas, this group. No football player should really be savored as a hero unless they did something heroic like save a life, stop a robbery etc. The problem with this and the black community is that they do things like this JUST BECAUSE OF VICK's race. It is like the OJ thing all over. Vick did his time, he played football well, let the man play. Please, do not honor him as a hero. - MIke Vick is a heck of a football player and a gifted athlete. I root for him on the field as an Eagle's player every week for the good of the team. He has paid his debt and has earned the right to get back to work and potentially be left alone as long as he accommodates with his probation. - On another site I read that the current owner of one of Vick's rehabilitated dogs asked to meet with Michael Vick and talk with him. One of Vick's staff replied "He don't care about those damn dogs." and this is on tape. Interesting right?

They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn’t kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead.”
This is NOT a HERO. He was never charged or punished for this abuse. He was punished for the organizing and running of the dog fighting. He also killed dogs in other unhumane ways. Not a HERO. Shame on the SE Virginia Arts organization.— Dog Lover Sal
