Vick sees himself on the run with Chip

Vick sees himself on the run with Chip

Who are you giving up on for Lent?
Chip Kelly -- Davis and Vick seem like bad calls to me.
The Flyers -- Does that ‘C’ on Giroux’s jersey stand for "cursed?"
The Sixers -- I gave up on them for Halloween.

There must be some sort of hot-tub time machine in the training room down at NovaCare.

A day after issuing a statement that didn't sound much like it was written by him, Michael Vick appeared on the "Mike and Mike in the Morning" ESPN radio show Tuesday to talk about how happy he is to get a reworked deal from the Eagles, one that makes him the likely 2013 starter.

Clearly, Vick thinks Kelly's offense will involve him running the ball a lot, even though every time he is asked about it, Kelly goes to great pains to explain that isn't at all what the read-option is about.

"In 2006 I ran for 1,000 yards -- and it wasn't hard," Vick said. "The only thing you have to do is train. I feel like I can still do that. To what level, I don't know, but I feel like I can do it at a high level."

The 2006 Falcons went 7-9 with Vick running for 1,039 yards, by the way. That was the only season in which Vick has played 16 games.

Even if Vick running a lot somehow were to be regarded as a positive offensive development, as we all know, he turns 33 in June and was getting chased down from behind by defensive linemen in 2012, leaving aside the six games he missed with a concussion. But Vick, who has missed 13 games in three years as the Eagles' starter, doesn't see injury as any more of an obstacle than aging. His thought process hasn't changed a bit.

"You have to be very cautious and meticulous about what you're doing on the field, but not to the point where it takes away from your game. Once you start trying not to get hurt, that's when you get hurt," Vick said. "I think what I have to do is just go out and play lights-out football, and not worry about getting hurt. I think over the last two years, I was trying to protect myself, trying to be sure that I was out on the football field with my teammates, just putting too much effort into not being injured. When you do that, it slows you down just half a second. I think when you're able to just go out and say, 'today I'm going to give it everything I've got' and leave it all out on the field, that's when you have the most success."

Vick alluded to "a whole array of things that brought me back."

Toward the end of last season, Phillymag.com's Tim McManus asked Vick about Chip Kelly, and Vick replied, "you mean the Notre Dame coach?" On "Mike and Mike," though, Vick said: "I've watched (Kelly's offense) for a long time. And I've watched Oregon have success. I know that doesn't mean it's going to correlate directly to the NFL. I just felt change was good, and I'm going to take my chances."

Vick said he is "motivated to be one of the elite quarterbacks in the league again" but "it won't happen overnight."

He said he thinks he can play "another 4 or 5 years."

Interesting that the only time Vick played all 16 games was when he rushed for over 1,000 yards. Reporters, fans, everyone keep saying that you can't be a running quarterback because you'll get hurt. Where is the proof that a quarterback gets hurt more when he runs than when he is a sitting duck in the pocket? Randall's major injuries occurred standing in the pocket. Same with McNabb. They have stats for everything. Does anyone know of one that proves -- or disproves -- what everyone accepts as gospel?

As a New York Giants fan I"m glad to see Vick will be playing next season. That ensures the NFC East that we need not worry about the Eagles being any threat next season. He reminds me of one of those over-the-hill boxers who never believes he's finished until he gets knocked out cold. He would be nice to see that next season.

@lbg casigates @jim for allegedly hating Vick because Vick is black. Logically, @lgb seems to be saying it is seriously wrong to judge a person by the color of his skin. But then @lgb states that no white QB will do. In so doing, @lgb judges not just one person, but rather a whole group of people, by the color of their skin.

"Vick sees himelf on the run with Chip". Does this mean Vick has gotten Chip into the dog fighting culture?

Offense will suck this year (get a decent qb option next year in the draft). Defense will really stink (as we go from 4-3 to 3-4) and then get a new DC. Probably go 4-12. Then we see if Chip can deliver. It's sad but all of the Philly teams sucking feels nostalgic (sad I know, but we endure!!!)

Stupid, stupid, stupid. A running QB will get beat down and likely have nagging injuries by playoff time. Lurie is an idiot, he insists on having coaches that favor helter skelter QBs. Nothing will ever change here as long as Lurie owns the team.

Chippah's read-option QB of the future is not currently on the Eagle's roster. Let's be real -- the upcoming season is not about wins, it's about installing a new attitude, a new culture, a new offensive system, and a stout defense. There is no way that Foles can run Kelly's offense, no matter what the coaches say about modifying their system to personnel. Truth be told, Vick has been a good citizen since he's been here, but to believe that he will eliminate turnovers and mental mistakes, or preserve his health by sliding/running out of bounds, throwing the ball away, etc. is fool's gold. Vick will get injured -- it's just a matter of how many games he'll miss.

I wish they would bring in Alex Smith to compete for the starting position. He could run this new offensive scheme better than Vick or Foles. Cut Edwards and replace him with whatever QB they draft.

I see Vick on the bench, injured, and out of the league next year.

Great. More running from our QB. Can't wait. So exciting. I mean running QBs have so many Super Bowl wins, how can we go wrong? This really sucks!

I was so HAPPY when the season ended and I just KNEW the Michael Vick era in Philadelphia had ended........If Mike Vick is starting for the Eagles, I will have to once again tune out until he is gone.

@shawnadelphia if alex smith could run this offensive scheme he'd still be starting in san fran. get real all you vick haters. as kelly stated and knows vick's skill set is more readily suited as a prototype qb for his scheme than foles.

in 2010 vicks great year defenders had no idea how fast jackson was. so either vick burned them with his feet or jackson burned defenders with his and vick would drop bombs where they needed to be dropped. all that changed jackson was shut down and vicks runs were too. the coaches kept that same formula though defenses already knew how to beat them. maybe different play calling will change everything thats me being positive.
