Vick: Landry hit just part of the game

POSTED: Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 1:59 PM

Got a word with Mike Vick today at NovaCare before he headed off to the golf course for some bye week relaxation.

One thing I wanted to follow up on was the LaRon Landry hit Vick took in the third quarter of the Washington game, which led to Vick leaving the field briefly, just long enough for Vince Young to throw an interception that could have turned the game around, had the Birds been facing a more capable opponent.

The issue I explored in today's Daily News was whether Vick understands the gamble he is taking with the Eagles' season when he seems to seek out contact, rather than sliding or otherwise giving himself up. I didn't get a real reassuring answer there.

The explanation given when Vick left the game was that dirt got up up under his visor and into his eye. Washington linebacker London Fletcher seemed intent on trying to establish that Vick was woozy and therefore concussed, which would have removed Vick from the proceedings the rest of the afternoon, as Fletcher undoubtedly knew.

"It was a little bit of everything," Vick said today. "Some dirt got in my eyes and I had the wind knocked out of me, but I wasn't dinged. That was London Fletcher saying I was dinged. I was trying to get the dirt out of my eyes. It was a minor situation and I was able to come back and was fully focused in the game, made the plays when I needed to make them."

Vick called the hit and the subsequent lobbying "part of the game. it's cool."

To my larger question, Vick first disputed that Reid's goal in instituting more three-step drops was "to not get me hit. I don't think that's correct. We always have three-step drops in our (game plan). Sometimes they just don't show up. It all depends on what the defense shows. We don't let them dictate what we do, but sometimes they do dictate where we need to go with the ball."

Asked if he thinks he can make it through 10 more weeks taking such hits, Vick said: "Yes, I think I can."

What I took away from all this is that Vick is still more worried about proving he can take a hit than he is about avoiding them. That's gutsy of him, but it won't help the 2-4 Eagles win any games if he goes down and out.

If we dont sign DJax he goes to Oakland or San Fran. So give 5 years 60 mil an keep it moving. Trade Asante to take off some cap. Trade up to get a ILB in the draft.

Ahhh..it's a running QB and the NFL, he's going to take hits and this isn't patsy cakes...HELLO. What do you want him to do go into the fetal position whenever a defender gets withing 5 yards of him? What do you expect him to say?.ow..those hits hurt..please tell them to stop.

What ever happened to the question "WHY?" Mike Vick, WHY don't you slide to prevent from getting hit like that? Andy Reid, WHY do you constantly try to trick defenses instead of just beating them? Desean Jackson/Drew Rosenhaus, WHY do you think Desean deserves top 5 WR money when he only makes a big play as often Devin Hester? WHY not Devin Hester money? Eagles organization, WHY aren't you working to sign Desean???
Les, please ask these questions! No one cares about how people feel, or what they think... I want to hear specific answers,

And my question to you is why do you care what DJac gets paid? Is he feeding your family? Sending you Christmas presents? Filling your gas tank if he gets a raise? He makes an occassional big play since he was concussed, otherwise he's not even the best receiver on our roster or better than 20th in the NFL and he want's top 10 money so he hasn't and isn't getting paid. Does that clear things up for you?

He's and NFL QB that runs and runs well. He is going to get hit. This should not be a surprise to him or anyone else. Wnat to aovid the hits? Read defenses faster, move the pocket, stop holding the ball for so long.

Vick's constant complaining about hits got him a flag that should never have been thrown. The flag he got in the end zone in the first quarter was a horrible call. It should have been intentional grounding and a safety...that play turned the game. Players should not be rewarded with bad calls just because they complain.

I guess you are blind if a helment hits the qb face it will be called, the same call was called on Babin against Matt Ryan, so why don't you stop whining and learn the rules moron.

Penfold18 I'm with you on that. I've posted it myself. If that was in Philly they would be beating us to death on national tv. Merlinknghts what are you smoking? AR is a players coach! Listen to them not your clouded opinion. Oh he's fat that what I usually read on these educated fans posts.

...and yet STILL NO MENTION of how the Washington fans were cheering when Vick was seemingly injured. Of course, only Philly fans get vilified for such behavior. I would expect the Philly writers to at least champion this cause, but alas they have failed once again.

It will NEVER happen, the media loves a good target and embellishing lies to sensationalize stories. If you think think it's truth and fairness the media seeks then I'm not sure if you've been away from the United States the past 40 years or not....

Now that's one for the books.."Reid has a long and uncaring attitude towards his players healt."...this coming from fans who think AR is too much of a players coach and from all accounts players past and present say they love playing for Reid. The intelligence of the "knowledgeable" Eagles fan base ceases to amaze me. Passionate..oh yeah...over the top much of the time...but dumb as rocks for the most part when it comes to football savvy..

Les, instead of carrying lying Andy's water and slandering London Fletcher, rewatch what happened in that play. Vick got hit in the head, helmet-to-helmet, he was lying on the ground, motionless except for legs twitching for a second or two, staggered up, was held up by teammate Clay Harbor while other teammates-McCoy and Jackson- clearly showed concern, with Jackson waving to the sideline for help. Fletcher was there too, but he was far from the ring leader and wasn't doing anything the other guys didn't do. Try to maintain some integrity and not be complicit in Reid's uncaring attitude toward his players' health- he has a long and shameful track record in that regard.

And so does every other NFL coach, who always left it up to the players until the league got involved. Players that are honest will tell you they get concussed an average of at least 10 times a year, it's only become a big deal recently. If you haven't noticed I'll point it out to you, these guys have millions of dollars at stake if their injury replacement steals their starting job. They hide things from the coaches so they don't have to come out, hence the rule changes.

These writers are like vampires. They look for any nibble they can find and then go in for the kill. Mike Vick has to say whatever it takes to make things 'PC' for you writers otherwise you're ready to fry him. GO MIKE VICK GO!

And just how many interceptions has Vick and Kafka thrown this season? Alot! Vick threw 4 against the Bills just last week.....Come on man! My question is just why would you call a play like that when you have a cold QB coming in the game, near your own endzone with the game tight?

So when he complains about getting hit late or in the head sportswriters call him a cry baby. When he doesn't complain he's trying to prove he can take a hit? Les, c'mon. What I get from his answers is that he's trying to give safe answers that won't start any more controversy.
