The Latest from Marty and Juan
Les Bowen, Daily News Staff Writer
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo spoke to reporters in the NovaCare auditorium Friday, as the Eagles prepare for Monday's game at New England.
Highlights:
*Mornhinweg confirmed to a wider audience something he had said to a couple of us earlier -- that the idea of Chris Polk as a fullback has been discussed. Negatives are that Polk weighs less than 225 pounds, and he didn't get drafted because teams were concerned about his loose right shoulder. Right shoulder klind of a big deal for a fullback. But Polk is a hitter, no question.
Polk said afterward that he is familiar with the discussion, though he hasn't been asked to learn any of the fullback plays. He said he will do anything he can to make the team. He said he didn't think his shoulder would be an issue.
*Mornhinweg said gargantuan rookie offensive tackle Dennis Kelly is having "just a terrific camp." The Eagles have used Kelly at tackle and at guard -- Todd Herremans' long run at guard before shifting to tackle last year seems to have made the world safe for 6-8 guards.
*Morhinweg said that although veteran Qb Trent Edwards doesn't get that many practice reps, he still has every chance of making the team. Which doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, really, but that is what he said.
*Castillo said getting off the field on third down would be a big focus Monday.
*Castillo again defended second-year safety Jaiquawn Jarrett. "JJ will knock your block off," Castillo said.
*Castillo acknowledged that "you can't keep all" the defensive linemen the Eagles are juggling. This is relevant because just about all of them seem to be able to rush the passer.
If Castillo were a brighter man, he would realize that his commendations mean nothing to fans who have watched the players that he coaches. Castillo has yet to establish credibility with any sensible human being for play on the defensive side of the ball. Claudio Vernight
Those Arena League WR's better keep their heads on a swivel, cause JJ will knock your block off. Just ask Juan.....Please, JJ is a bad football player. He's overmatched, physically and mentally. It was a bad pick, dont compound a mistake with another mistake by wasting a roster spot on a guy who didnt earn it. audrina
let him play special teams mets_collapse_is_funny_to_me
JJ was a bad pick...and he is coached by a guy who is over his head.....'thanks andy.....good job.....the kid or the coach is not smart enough to play in this league nuggett
This is why players "love" playing for Andy Reid. No matter how bad you stink there are no repercussions. Everyone is great and having great practices. All in Dream Team. Dynasty! Scope33- GREAT POINT!!!

Castillo is NOT a defensive coordinator period. I still believe a change must be made after the second pre season game if Andy needs to win this year. Jarrett at best should be on practice squad until .....he's CUT! bill poore
Or was he endorsing Jarret the jewlry store angrywhtguy
What do you honestly expect these coaches to say? Until JJ is gone, and it certainly looks like he will be, every coach will say positive, encouraging things about him. Maybe they even turn him into a draft pick - although that's probably a stretch. But just try to keep it real. BrianM8614
ok if im mistaken this is just jarrets second year right. u guys act like he has been here for years..typical impatient and negative philly (supposed to be) fans. these are the same fans that wanted kolb to be the eagles franchise qb..cdfu..hows that working out for AZ? man losing his job to a qb that wasnt even drafted! if u want football knowledge these arent the fans to talk football with..no football iq at all..just idiotic opinions they try to pass as facts bigjay215- What do you want the coaches to say he stinks and they made a mistake? They don't throw players under the bus, except for David Akers in a contract year.
