Should Vick play next week?
Daily News staff
Like most NFL teams, the Eagles will not play their starters in the preseason finale. Next Thursday's game against the Jets will be almost exclusively backups and those players fighting for the final remaining roster spots.
For the Eagles, the interesting question is where Michael Vick fits in.
His six plays last night were his first game action since 2006 as the Eagles tried to "get his feet wet," in coach Andy Reid's words. Vick did not have the benefit of a full training camp and is trying to get acclimated to the offense with post-practice sessions with the coaches. After the preseason ends, he faces a suspension that could keep him off the field for up to five weeks. He said he has not heard yet.
Asked whether Vick would play against the Jets, Reid said, "There's a chance."
Asked whether he wanted to play, Vick said: "Hopefully, whatever the plan is I have to go with it. I may be out there, maybe not. We’ll have to see.”
Vick put himself at 70 percent physically and said the better shape he gets in, the more he can help the team.
"Regardless of what we are doing, I will be able to make it work," he said. "If it’s at the quarterback position or the wildcat formation, regardless of what we are doing, if I am out there, I just want to be productive. That is why I go home and study every night, that’s why I prepare myself and that’s why I am spending that extra time after practice trying to get my body back to playing shape. I am almost there, about 70 percent there. So, right now I am just going off my natural ability. Once I get myself into top shape, the sky is the limit. I just want to use my abilities to help this team.”
Here are some reactions to Vick's performance last night:
Hank Baskett: “He looked good. He definitely has an arm on him. He read the defense [well]. It’s all about being on the same page. No matter what happens, it’s all about the quarterback and the receiver being on the same page ... He’s been showing great signs, and great character and poise throughout practice. And he came out here and did it tonight. He played a good game.”
Jason Avant: “He made a couple guys miss. It’s going to take him a while to get after them. Being away for two years, I thought he did good. He stepped into a couple throws. He looks better than most people are expecting. This is a game -- at this level, with these types of athletes -- that you just can’t come back into and be the same player. But tonight, he proved that he still has a lot left to play.”
Jeremy Maclin: “I thought he looked alright. He only got a few snaps, but I thought he executed when he was in there. I thought he did very well.”
DeSean Jackson: “I think it was really important for him to get out there. Get some things going and get into that rhythm, as far as being with the starters, flying around and making a lot of plays. But we all still have a lot of work to do. As we get to practice more, we can keep grinding and keep getting better ... I think he looked pretty good to me. There was time when if he looked at me I was open in the corner of the end-zone and it would have been a touchdown. He did good and I’m looking forward to heading into the season and moving from here.”
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio: “I’m happy for him that he is getting the opportunity to resume his career. I wish him the best with that.”

jeremy maclin takes one hit and you people criticize him..if you listen to his interview the hit didn't bother him, he tweaked his ankle..again, typical Philly fan whining...the only losers in here are some of the idiot fans... merlinknghts
6 and 10 go suck on a soft pretzel..you don't like Philly stay in your ghetto.... merlinknghts
Ellishorse..you sound like such a caring ,loving ,kinda indivdual...you mother should be very proud of your forgiving nature...and i'm sure you one friend notices that attribute about you..if you even have one.... merlinknghts
You guys are in for a world of trouble. You don’t mess with the quarterback position, let alone a guy who has taken the team to 5 NFC title games, a Super Bowl and the franchises’ all-time leading passer, for Mike Vick, a guy who has never had back to back winning seasons and has two playoff wins! If you wanted to play Vick, let him play in game #4, not in the third game which is the dress rehearsal for the starters. Mike Vick will not play in game one of the season, McNabb will. There is a reason why the Atlanta Falcons were turned upside down and never became a consistent team…Mike Vick. Looks like you will have to find out the hard way. Bad move. nodnarb4002
Ellishorse, i would shot any dog anytime to see you wet your diaper vince deer killer
Who cares if Vick plays next week (or any week)? 5 is the guy. Any play that takes the ball out of 5's hands is a wasted play. misplacedeaglefan
Lurie should step in and cut Vick now. They went out and spent on new linemen, who need to learn the offense. They drafted skill players, who need to learn the offense and coordination with McNabb. And what's Reid's priority? Making up sandlot plays. It's gonna be another last place finish (3rd in 5 years). But at least you have new shirts to wear. jtj06
Yes he should play because he needs the reps and practice. Another reason is because before the year is over, he will quarterbacking the team. McNabb is already feeling the pressure, and its no secret he is insecure, and always got his way in how the Eagles got rid of players he had issues with or were threats (TO,FredEX,Garcia,).But I think the Eagles brass has changed in their bowing down to what McNabb wants, and if he don't perform, he will be subbed. It happened last year, and I definetly see it happening again. watsonmr
Ya' know, i don't agree with what Mr Vick did myself. But like alot of others on this post i say he deserves another chance just like anyone. And for the people out there who are protesting and are so much of an animal lover, why don't you guys just gather up some fruits, nut and burries and live in a cave. Trash your TVs VCRs, DVDs, your Cars And just about everthing you own because somewhere down the line you will find that some animal died so that you could enjoy it. And let's not forget those leather coats and shoes you're so fond of. Anything you own that has anything to do with Japan, get rid of it to. If so that deep into it that you want to see a human being die, then these are the things you should be considering.... If not, just tell us the real reason you hate this man so much.... getwiththis
They better use him. McNabb isstarting to look like his usual "my bad" self. t36namp
All You protestors go protest the OIL WAR where thousands of AMERICANS ( not dogs) are being Killed AND MAIMED for naught! Mans 'best friend', won't have a friend if their owners come back in a box. Remember the U.N. told Bush there were no WMD in IRAQ, but Bush and his OIL Pals made MILLIONS!!!!!! GO EAGLES !!! Go Mike VICK !!!! ( who served time and lost millions, he was a DUMB kid at 21 when it started.) Give peace a chance and all good dogs go to heaven... lensinilas- He has paid for his crime and should be given the opportunity to earn his living doing what he loves. How can we expect to be forgiven if we do not learn to forgive? It has long been part of the game that opponents say less than kind things to each other in the hope of getting the other person's goat to gain a competitive edge. I think that we might expect to hear our opponents barking loudly when he is on the field.
- Vick will not play much because if he plays well, and the fans get behind him, #5 will get jealous. He was already hearing the "We want Vick" chants the other night. Btw, you will never hear the "We want Kolb" chants. He is a permanent back-up QB and that's it. That first "pass" further confirms his back-up ability. It would be nice if this team learned the rule book. Like: What is a fumble? What is a lateral? What will cause a safety? What happens in overtime? What is a penalty?
i would love 2 c vick play 4 atleast 1 QT. i mean i wanna c wat hes working with. i can c he still has a cannon 4 an arm. ive seen enough of kolb. we signed vick. he was once a dominant player so i think he should get a shot at being the backup 2 dmac. philly sports
Vick will keep Mcnabb on his Toes!!!!!! Cobb, seems to be a BUST! lensinilas
